Specify cheap plumbing to replace immediately?

I talked to a homeowner who recently built a home. He said that plumbers make a killing on selling fixtures, so their strategy was to build with the cheapest fixtures (sounded mostly like faucets) and then replace them right away with the higher end stuff they really wanted. Is this a good idea?

Maybe for door hardware but not plumbing fixtures.

Then why buy your fixtures from a plumber? They aren't the only ones you can get them from.

Not a good idea. The amount you save will be negated by the cost of what you throw out (or hopefully donate, if you actually go through with this idea).

plumbing fixtures are not easy replacements when it comes to opening up a wall to change out the shower/tub valves

Do a job once and do it right (the first time)!

You can buy your own fixtures and fittings you know. Just be sure you have the right ones and a full, complete set. If you aren't sure, perhaps you should leave it up to an experienced professional.
