Is it normal for ceiling joists not to overlap one another?

In my attic some of the ceiling joists are infront of each other and another piece of wood connects them.
I have always seen them overlapped.....

Here is a vid of the joists

Here is a link that might be useful: ceiling joists

I couldn't see anything in the video but 2 or 3 inches of the ends of the joists must rest on supports whether they are overlapped or not. Joists cannot be spliced in any way.

A case of where a picture is not worth a thousand words. I suspect the walkway you're on is over a beam/girder on which the joists are resting.

Building codes require joists to overlap and be fastened to one another, or butt end to end and be fastened together using a splice plate just as it appears in your video.

While not common practice today, there is nothing wrong with your installation...(provided the joint is over a beam, girder, wall or partition as others have mentioned.)
