Built ins only on one side of fire place - Yay or Nay?

We have the door leading to study on one side of fireplace. We have the option to have built ins on the other side of fire place. Would it be weird to have built-ins only on one side of fire place? I personally feel it would be nicer had it been symmetric.

If I don't put in the built-ins, what do I do with that space?

You can evoke a feeling of symmetry even without the same exact items on either side. If the door on the one side would balance the built-ins on the other, I'd say go for it.

I love my parents' situation: the stone extends to surround the study door. It makes it feel like a "secret room" as one of the grands says. The other side of the fireplace is drywall, it's where the piano sits. But if it had built ins it would look nice, too.
