Building a Home

Double/single, wood/fiberglass front door?

Anyone have opinions on this? Do you have a wood door you've had trouble with? Is wood expected on a 4000 sq ft 750k-850k house? I really don't love the look of fiberglass.

We are considering double door with no glass or single with transoms on sides and top. Have you done either and love or regret it? Our door will not get any direct sunlight due to a covered porch so I'm not worried about direct uv on the door. It will be a walnut, dark stain if wood.

Hi aam31,

We did both. Most of the door is fiberglass, but all the trim is mahogany. Our door is recessed, sheltered and north facing so I don't worry about the real wood component. I found the combination really fooled the eye that the whole door was wood more than the fiberglass door, with fiberglass trim. Here is a picture. The transom at this point has paper blind on it for privacy, but the blind will be removed when we are done building.
