Pine Rail and Composite vs. Cedar Shutters?

Hello,

We were thinking about redoing the shutters after we close on our house, but the builder's selection isn't too bad. We have pine rail and composite vs. cedar shutters and we don't know which one is better. Anyone familiar or want to add your opinions to these? We'd greatly appreciate any insight. We'd like what looks the most realistic, but one that requires less maintenance. Would either of these work?

Perhaps photos of your house and the shutters you are considering would help....

BTW, you mention realistic. That has more to do with the shutter size than with whatever material you decide to use.
Realistic means they should be wide enough to give the illusion that they will cover the window when closed.

Our shutters are made of cedar, and they are really nice. They look very thick and substantial compared to many that I see (not sure what other ones are made of, though, so not really able to compare.) We painted ours, but I remember how pretty they looked before. Our builder even asked if we wanted to stain them instead, but it didn't match the style of our house so we didn't. If you like what you have, though, I wouldn't change...they weren't cheap. I would probably spend the $ on something else!
