How to choose products at showrooms before knowing who builder is

I understand that it's to our benefit to have as many products and finishes specified for GCs to accurately bid on our house build. But when I have gone into showrooms, the first question they ask is who our builder is. I know that certain salespeople are assigned to certain builders, and another salesperson does not want to spend the time with me if another is going to ultimately get the sale.
How do I go about slecting stuff before we know the GC?

Why is it their business who the builder is? Are you paying for the material or are they?

They say that the builder can have an account with them and the prices would be cheaper. I once worked for a lighting store and we had inside sales people and outside sales people. Inside sales handled the walk in retail customers. Outside sales dealt with new homebuilding. It's not that inside sales won't talk to customers building new, but they know its a waste of their time commission-wise.

Just identify the desired materials and finishes in your workbook and keep until you have a builder. Revise as may be needed for taste or budget after that.

Early material, finish and fixture selection are just that: early! You will work with your architect and/or builder for final selections.
