Most venting sidelites have seen recently have what is known as a mulitpoint lock (which unfortunately for you is not an easy retrofit). There is not really an easy solution to this from what I know and anything you do will be a bit of a jury rig so from my thinking your locksmith may be correct but their also may be other solutions that I am not thinking of. But I cannot think of anyway a security bar could be used for this application. A hasp and a padlock would be another crude l;locking method but of course that would look like ass.

Have you considered cremone bolts for each active leaf?

Cremone bolts (new to me) would do the job, but I do not see any locking models.

If someone took the time to break a window, they could just reach inside and turn the handle, and voila.

Door locks are a deterrent. They cannot make your house a vault. I'm sure your house has numerous windows in which a grown man could fit through. The french door is the least of your worries. My point is that you won't make your house burglar proof; you just want to make it noisy and a nuisance to break into.

our alarm system has some sort of sound of glass breaking security feature. if the all glass patio door breaks, the system picks up on the sound and the alarm goes off. it was 20 dollars extra. maybe you'd feel more secure with this??

There are also alarm systems which pick up breaking glass and automatically call the police, if the proper settings are used.
