Fancy outlines increase insulation costs!

We've often flatly said to reduce building costs, simplify the plan outline by removing bump-outs, the stacked gables, the changes in roof lines etc. (go towards a cube shape) but weren't explaining why except that they are hard to frame and cover with roofing.

One of the factors is insulation! Was researching insulation and ran into a DUH forehead slapper ... edges are expensive to deal with.

1 - more wall angles to fill and seal means more labor and expensive materials needed for edge treatment (taping, caulking, sealing) at each change of plane on the walls - and more time needed to do it.

2 - complex roof-wall intersection has the same problem - the ornate outline runs up the linear feet of edge treatment where wall meets roof

Same goes for siding ... every change of direction provides another place where trimming and fitting must be done.

And painting ... every extra corner is one more that needs to be cut in.
