72 inch vanity won't fit with drywall

Has this happened to anyone? Architect drew a 72" space for a bathroom vanity but after framing and drywall, the space is 71". We had a furniture double vanity online picked out measuring 71.9". Any ideas or solutions to keep this vanity? I really didn't want to do cabinetry, but maybe I need to give in?

Alternatively - what is on the other side of the walls on either side of the vanity? And, are they either of them non- supporting walls with no plumbing running through them? If so, while it might be a PITA to do, you could have the 2x4s or 2x6s that frame one of the walls next to the vanity taken down, ripped to remove 1 inch, and then put back up again to gain that extra inch you need.

A non-supporting wall doesn't HAVE to be framed with 2x4s or 2x6s. 2x3s or 2x5s will work fine - especially for an interior wall. Done right, once the sheetrock is put up, you'll never know that one wall is a tiny bit thinner than the other walls in your house. And, depending on how many studs would have to be removed and ripped - and how much electrical wiring needs to be removed and the replaced - is might not even be terribly expensive to do. Just do it BEFORE the sheetrock is put up on either side!

Is it the cabinet or the top that measures 71.9? If it is the top and it overhangs, maybe the cabinet will fit and the top needs to be altered.

It appears from the online specs the countertop is 71.9".

There might be a discrepancy. The main listing on modernbathroom.com says the "main cabinet" is 71.9", here:

But the URL below - the PDF spec sheet from Virtu USA shows the countertop measuring 71.9".

You are going to have to go and see the vanity, tape measure in hand.

The dimensions are likely the minimum dimensions for a 'slide in ' installation.

Depending on style, the top may b wider than the carcase itself allowing you to cut the op down to steal a few inches for your space.

NEVER do any cabinetry until the drywall is up. However, it's a common scenario to just cut a trench into the drywall and slid the top into place and mud it so you never know that was done. IF the cabinet box itself can fit. And a 72" box won't really fit into a 72" hole most of the time because one or both of the walls isn't usually perfectly straight. You always have to leave room for fillers, even if that's only 1/2" on each side of the alcove. And that goes double for kitchen cabinetry. Walls are NEVER EVER straight enough to not use fillers for proper clearance.

We have not ordered anything yet thank goodness. Might call manufacturer to get exact measurements. However, looks like we have to let our cabinet guys do a custom vanity for that spot.

Called modernbathroom.com. The base cabinet is 70.9" and the countertop is 71.9".

I guess until drywall is up we won't know for sure the exact measurement of our space. We are at framing stage and 71" is our post drywall calculation based on width of drywall and existing framed space.

Has anyone trenched drywall as GreenDesigns mentioned above to fit a countertop? Would love to see a photo.

One other thing to check on is how those cabinet doors (if there are any) operate. If they need space on either side of the cabinet to open all the way, you may need to go custom even now that you've discovered the cabinet body is 1" smaller...

My granite guys suggested cutting into my drywall for a seamless look, and I nixed that. I just, emotionally, couldn't let them cut into my nice, new drywall! (totally irrational).
