Geothermal Boom may go Boom!

Geothermal energy alternatives are catching on. But there can be unforeseen risks.

A bore hole recently drilled for a vertical geothermal system could have resulted in a potential disaster. The unregulated installer hit a pocket of natural gas that was only detected when a neighbour reported a bubbling in his sump. Turns out there is no regulation of deep drill bore holes in Ontario. Is this the the only jurisdiction without regulations?

Likely wouldn't qualify under new rules in force last year. But thousands of southern Ontario homes are heated by private natural gas wells dating back to the early 20th Century in some cases.

How deep was the well? Don't know of any rules down here either. They drill as deep as it takes to get to the water for a well.
