Hardwood floors easily damaged??

In the decorating forum there is a thread going about someone with hardwood floors that were damaged by a guests' high spiked heels. We are considering hardwood and I am a frequent high heel wearer, so I am wondering if their are any hardwoods that can withstand shoes better than others?

Hardwood floors are somewhere between indestructable and soft.
My oak floors are HARD, heels aren't gonna dig into them but the finish will show marks from dragging stuff across them. They will gouge if abused. Afterall, it IS WOOD. Wood floors originated from the so-called abundance of trees, hence stick built homes and wooden floors. There are more durable materials, but wood is familiar and "warm".

I have site finished oak floors and they have dented from things I've dropped in the kitchen and my son rocking back on his chair at the kitchen table. I have no trouble believing they could be dented by spike heels. (Un)fortunately, I can't wear them anymore.

Totally Confused

You could post a weight limit at the front door.

Do you wear high heels at home? Spiked?

There are softer woods and there are harder woods. The lighter colors tend to show less wear. So a white oak is your best bet - especially if you get the kind with more knots and imperfections from the beginning - #2 is what they call it I believe. Then you will never notice the dents.

High unit pressures will dent wood. A 100 pound person supported on heel of less than 1 square inch will exert much greater pressure than will a 350 pounder supported on 10 square inches. Moving furniture with built-in casters on hardwood floors will often leave permanent trails.

macv, lol that's funny.

david cary, actually if we have a dinner party and are dressed up, I do wear my heels inside.

Now, I'm not sure about wood floors...

Right - I guess I was thinking all the time....

The rubber tip on spikes usually spreads the load out enough to prevent damage, but if the nail head is exposed it can dent wooden floors, even oak.

I wear heels - including spiked heels - in the house on an almost daily basis and our 80-year-old quartersawn red oak shows no sign of denting.

RE: Hardwood floors easily damaged??

Our red oak floors have been in constant use since 1966, and there is absolutely NO denting due to high heels.

ok- so heres my advise- do some research

We just had Mirage Cognac Semi-gloss maple put in our new home-- there are already scratches and i was practically crying- now i have throw rugs everywhere b/c of dog.... a few things- 1st we expected Cashmere finish (less shiny) but in our contract there was NO finish written.... builder put in semi-gloss-- we cant fight it b/c its not written- i was very upset b/c iknow i told them cashmere--
i really wanted maple- less lines than oak-- but in retrospect i think oak / cashmere- might have been the way to go b/c i suspect you would have seen the scratches less .... but now its mine and so i will live with it and deal with it--- mostly its the entrence way that is getting the most scratches (DH wanted tile)- uggg i shoudl have said yes to tile-- but we agreed that we can always tile the entry down the road....

Of all the threads I think the "hardwood floor dilemma" must be the most popular, lol! Personally, DH and I love, love, love them!! No, they are not perfect, yes they get scratches but they are so warm and easy to take care of. After the first few nicks everyone can relax and then in a few years they can be refinished!!! Just like a brand new floor again, what's not to like? We have had hickory and now, in our new home we have white oak #2 with a satin finish. Good luck on your decision, high heels and all, LOL

I wear high heels in the house all of the time. I have maple floors and have never had any damage. However recently I noticed these little half smilee faces smiling back at me in front of my bedroom door mirror after trying on some brand new shoes. Absolutely no wear on the bottom of the heel. I would have to agree with bus driver, I think it is a pressure point issue. I weigh 125 pounds but that weight on less than a half inch in diameter or a bit smaller than my baby finger nail size heel seems to have caused enough pressure to cause dents.

Do what I am about to do.....put in re-claimed hardwood floors. That way you don't worry about any nicks or dents that happen, by either your shoes or the kids. Yet they are still warm and beaustiful!!

I sure wish my wife would wear high heels around the house!

srercrcr - I was thinking the same thing but afriad to write it.

RE: Hardwood floors easily damaged??

We have distressed oak plank floors in our house. We just moved in yesterday so we don't have the full experience yet. Last week dh decided to try out the new wood stove. I'm not sure he did it, but he managed to drop a huge hunk of burning wood on the floor. I looked over and he was kicking embers around. Anyway, we have a a few burn marks on the floor, but they don't look bad. The marks sort of blend in. I don't think high heels would be a problem on these floors. My builder told me marks won't show much, it's the streaks in the shine on the varnish that will be more visible.

RE: Hardwood floors easily damaged??

Yikes....I didn't mean it to sound that way? When I am preparing to go out I slap on a pair of shoes and away I go but I walk through the house, with my shoes on, in order to get out through the front door...does that sound better!!

 o
RE: Hardwood floors easily damaged??

You all are great! I appreciate all the feedback! I love the idea of using reclaimed wood or having new floors with the distressed finished...but then again, I also love the sleek dark finish as well. Oh decisions. It's just about as bad as trying to decide on which heels to wear :)
