Floor Lights

Working through electrical details right now. Where are people putting flood lights? This is in addition to outdoor accent lighting.

Is anyone putting separate flood lights on the side of the home? We have 7.5' side setbacks in a suburban neighborhood, and my wife is concerned about security. But that seems like overkill to me.

Not doing it. We will light up our home and yard with other outdoor and landscape lighting. Flood lights are just one option for security lighting, not the only option.

We have them in a couple of places. They have motion detectors. Both on the back corners of the house - one for security and one to add some light to our upstairs terrace (we have a walk out basement). Because most of the wall space on the terrace is taken up by 4 pairs of screened doors, we could only fit two wall fixtures there.

The side benefit to the one on the far side of the garage is it will light up when I push the trash out at night or for night time games of basketball ;)

They make more attractive versions now - you don't have to have the ones with the big exposed bulbs . . .

Definitely agree that floodlights would be overkill. And with only 7.5 ft setbacks, your neighbors may also complain that your floodlights are encroaching on their use and enjoyment of their own property. There is already enough light in most suburban areas that it is nearly impossible to see any except the very brightest stars at night. Please don't contribute to more unnecessary light pollution!

Besides, brighter lights do not always equate with more safety. Overly bright lights can actually create dark shadows that can hide potential attackers.

RE: Floor Lights

I am surprised more communities are not following suggestions from Dark Sky Org. Our community allows no uplighting or floods. We were thrilled when we found this out!
