Our driveway installer just quoted us $4000 for 1200 square feet, 4" thick, rebar reinforcement, exposed aggregate. That's about $3.33 s.f. We're in Seattle where labor costs are high.

$5 sq. ft. by my builder in Atlanta. If you don't want to get stuck with a small 23' side entry garage apron width you have no choice but to use the builder and pay his surcharge. Win some, lose some.

Thanks everyone! We will be tiling the concrete foundation we pour. I'm not actually sure about how many inches the foundation needs to be (but at least 4"). I wanted to get a rough estimate here before I spoke to my builder about it so I had some knowledge on the subject. You have been very helpful. bwallen149 -- you have been extremely thorough and it really helps!

Our concrete was $2.60 per sf.(mat & labor) We are in NW Ohio. That included 4" thickness and either a smooth or broomsweep finish. Good Luck!

I live in Houston TX I am a concrete contractor. I charge $2.40 a sq ft for 4 inch thick patios with 3/8" rebar on 12" centers. My concrete cost $73 a cubic yd and 3/8" rebar runs $2.30 for a 20 ft length. My cost includes all grading forming and to pour and finish the concrete. If you are pouring against your house slab you need to have an expansion joint seperating the two slabs or you need to dowel the two slabs together. Before you seal your slab check with the tile installer. Good luck with your new patio.

Az dream. I live in Az and paid less than $3 sq ft less than a year ago. This was for a side walk, patio extention and pad for hot tub. About 1000 sq ft. Formed, finished etc for about $2500, and this when concrete was hard to get. Good Luck !

Most builders will charge you $4.50 or more, ours wanted to.

in NJ. I was just quoted $2500 for 4" thick, 420 sq ft. dyed concrete. This included grading. Seems high by what you all are saying....

It's funny that this thread popped up again today (thanks sprengle1). They poured our back patio, courtyard and some other stoops just a couple hours ago! We are paying a little less than $3/sf and it is supposed to be about five inches thick (we will be putting tile on it). Here's a photo of our "wet" back patio:

I live in Houston and want to have a new concrete patio poured. The plan is lay slate tile over the new patio. There is an existing patio which was pour in 1995, however, it slopes toward the house and causes water to puddle near the slab. Can I pour over the existing patio? In order to level the area I will need about 5 inches next to the house and 2 inches 15 feet from the house (25 feet in length). Please tell me that I don't have to remove the existing slab!

I live in Magnolia (FM 1488 & FM 2978) which is a suburb of Houston, Texas and am interested in adding on to my 10' x 10' concrete slab patio on the back of my house. I want to make the patio 16' deep and run the entire length of the back of the house (about 41 ft). If any conctractors want to bid on this, then please email me and include your company name, website (if you have one), phone number, etc? I was thinking about make the outer edge (41 ft outer edge of the patio) have a curve to it rather than making the patio a boxy rectangular shape. I will eventually cover the patio (probably match the roof shingles on the house) so I want to add a thicker outer perimeter for the patio to support the load, but the rest will be 4 inches thick (should be sufficient). One more thing that might affect pricing...the concrete truck can be driven through my side yard to the back of my house, rather than wheelbarrowing the cement to the back. Let me know if you are interested and provide a price. Right now it is just weeds and wild grass. Please indicate if your price includes removing vegetation, digging/leveling/grading, building forms, pouring concrete, finish, etc.

Someone else mentioned the possibility of pouring over old concrete. I've got a situation with a patio in pretty bad shape - uneven and once apparently covered with a glued on outdoor carpeting. There are wood strips between the squares which aren't in great shape. There's a very unsafe concrete slope from near the door sill down to the patio. I had been thinking about redoing the whole patio, but would it be possible to build up the patio about 2-4" on top of the old so it comes to the same height as the top of the little concrete ramp there now (and then have another ramp as required further on out away from the house). Would be nice to be able to do a pour-over but don't know how wise this would be.

How much more is your contractor charging for cutting out ummmm lets say 2000 square feet @ 4" (40x50)of established st augustine sod for a new basketball court. Is $5bucks/square ft too much especially since steel/rebar and fuel costs have gone up? were in the Houston burbs south of i-10

First, I am amazed this thread is 5 years old, but I wanted to thank everyone for their input. I'm a pretty good do-it-yourself person when it comes to remodeling, but for big pours of cement, I leave that to the contractors. In northeast Kansas, Dan Hooyer of Hooyer Concrete 785-562-3603 is meticulous and does fabulous work. I've seen walls, floors, and color. When I did my own patio, I had sloping issues and the finish wasn't evenly smooth. When Dan did the garage floor and walls...perfection.

As far as cost, I should have paid to have Dan do my patio. I may have saved on the labor, but it's like comparing Picasso (Dan) to a grade school fingerpainter (me). A valuable lesson in cement.

I am a concrete contractor in Houston, TX. (www.conspecinc.com) After reading these treads I am amazed at how little people really know about concrete placement. First, the smaller the job = the more it costs because we are charged a "short load fee" for orders under 6 yards. This fee can be up to $175 "plus" the cost of the concrete. Also - for slab on grade applications wire mesh is much better than rebar (contrary to popular opinion). It has to do with the fact that reinforcement on "slab on grade" applications is based upon the strength of the GRADE not necessarily the reinforcement. The reinforcement just prevents the crack from developing and wire mesh does a better job. I address this on my website. Finally, concrete costs have gone up as the economy (gas prices), drive costs. I charge $6 to $7 PSF for stamped colored concrete and $3.50 to $4 for standard. In Houston, contractors have a habit of putting wood for control joints which ultimately rots out. Not a good idea. I don't use wood for control joints unless requested. Also concrete can be ordered in MANY WAYS! A contractor can order substandard concrete (but the owner does not know the difference), cheap.... but GOOD concrete costs about $80 per yard. In short a concrete patio "should" cost $3.50 to $4 PSF in Houston that is - if you seek quality. Concrete can have "fillers" which after 28 days "will" give you 3000 PSI but "after" this period it will slowly diminish. Good concrete however, increases its strength with age. Good concrete takes 50 years to totally cure. My website gives you the truth about concrete placement.

We are trying to have a driveway extension approx 12x24 ft with base to level site to 4" approx coupled with a patio 15 x 15 ft x 2 inches thick. Rebar, foundation forms and labor running $3k and concrete truck approx 13 yards @ $1.5k...in Spring Branch Texas...Does anyone think this is an outrageous cost? One contractor submitted a $7k bid. I would be VERY careful in placing concrete two inches think on your patio. The ONLY way this should be accomplished is if you make SURE the sub-grade is compacted to a minimum 1500 PSI. The strength of "slab on grade" concrete is vested in the SUBGRADE - not necessarily the concrete. Most do not understand the simple fact that the slab of concrete is only as strong as the "grade" or what the concrete is placed on. It does not matter how much steel, rebar, or reinforcement placed into it - if the subgrade is faulty you will have a problem futuristically. I am a concrete contractor (28 years experience and degreed), and try to explain the MANY misconceptions about concrete placement.

For example - people call it "cement" which is like calling flour a cake. Cement is only one of the basic "INGREDIENTS" in concrete. Think of cement as the glue that bonds everything else together. The more cement one puts in the mix = the stronger the concrete. People erroneously believe reinforcement makes concrete stronger, but in reality the amount of cement in the mix determines the strength.
