Design question on beams

Our plan has a very open kitchen and dining area that connect (open) to a sunken great room. The great room will have a silvery sand carpet, like a light taupe. There are walls of windows on the back of the house from the kitchen to the great room. Kitchen/dining has 10' ceilings, great room sinks 8" total (two 4" steps) and vaults.

I'm planning on vault beams of some kind in the great room and transitioning to just straight across attached beams in the kitchen/dining. The beams will all run the same way.

Do I have to have the same color beam in both areas? My architect thinks if I did white in one room and wood in the other it'd be okay, but I'm wondering about a greyish wood in the vaulted great room and a walnut colored stain in the kitchen. I'm wondering if keeping the style and wood grain the same would be enough to make the transition look good and not hodge podge. Thoughts or ideas are welcome!
