Which cabinets, flooring and trim?

We are building a house and have so many more questions than we thought possible. We plan on being in this house for the majority of our lives, so we bought a nice acreage lot in an estate subdivision. We are really interested in using materials in our home that will stand the test of time. The overall look we are going for is a rustic craftsman. So, our biggest questions is about the types of woods we should use. Because of costs in our area, we are basically forced to use alder for our doors, base molding and casing. We do not want to use alder for our cabinets due to the softness of the wood, so we are trying to find a species that will look good with the alder trim. Any suggestions? We are leaning towards cherry in a medium brown stain. Also, what do you think about a medium stained hickory floor to go with the alder trim. Thanks in advance for any advice.
