| Okay, I'm frustrated and need help! We've had two shingle style ranch plans drawn up by a great architect but both came in at more $ than we're willing to spend, too much house for the neighborhood, and we're thinking about the fact that we're soon to be empty nesters and why are we building a 3700 square foot house! We think about bringing the square footage in on our current plan but that will change the exterior look of the house so much, from a nice long ranch look to just a house, if you know what I mean.
So it's back to the drawing board. We've been focusing on shingle style but we like other styles, too - California contemporary, western open floor plans, french country. The house will be on a golf course. I really want an unusual look for the house, something unique and different (without being TOO odd or too contemporary), and I'm having trouble finding it online. I'd like to find something and then take it to my architect and have it drawn up, with our interior plan of course. Are there websites that show unusual house plans? Houzz is helpful but not really focused on plans. I've been to Jack Arnold's site, too. Any ideas are very much appreciated! J. |

| I found that these guys are a bit different-thinking, in both interior and exterior.(see link below) Also, the folks at http://houseplans.co/ have great contemporary plans that are not too far out. houseplans.com has a large variety of plans, from extremely traditional to ultra modern. That's all I can think of at the moment. |

| Those Hajek For inspiration, get some issues of Architectural Digest or raid your local library. Choose a style, stick to it and work with your architect. Just a thought. |

| You nailed it - the biggest struggle right now is just picking a style. We like so many! But the one that feels the most "home" to me is shingle style with plain contrasting with interesting wood trim on the inside. But those Jack Arnold designs just call my name, too, and my husband loves them, but the inside (shingle, wood, beams, etc.) might not exactly match the outside. |

| Allison0704's home is cohesively styled and beautifully detailed. If you don't have quite the budget, you can find less costly fixtures and finishes. Paykel and Rohl might as well be types of deli sandwiches to most people. |

| Have you seen the Not So Big House books by Sarah Susanka? She talks a lot about spending your money on special features instead of unneeded space. Her original book and Creating the Not So Big house are my favorites. |

| We are in the same boat. We just got some plans back from our architect, but they're about 900 sq ft too large so we're trying to cut space now. But we may need to go back to the drawing board, ugh. I love the shingle style as well and it seems nearly impossible to find a nice shingle style plan around 3000 sq ft! They are all HUGE it seems.
