ISO Holiday Cocktail

Anyone have a special alcoholic holiday cocktail (martini, mixed drink, punch etc) that is festive either in taste or in color?

Cranberry juice, 7-up or sprite and vodka (to your taste or % mix perferance)

I also agree that a 5-7 timeframe would need heavier foods as it would be around suppertime and some/many would not have eaten their evening meal before that time. So, possibilities? Gougeres, cheese straws, cheese thumbprints filled with hot pepper jelly, hot cheese and artichoke dip, spinach dip, Teresa's cheeseball or pimento cheese suggestion. A bit heavier would be sweet potato biscuits with a sliver of honey/glazed ham, rye puffs filled with cream cheese and corned beef, like a Rueben, small dinner rolls or croissants with chicken, turkey, chicken salad, ham, thin slices of roast beef. Desserts could be Christmas cookies, of course, or fudge, some "bark", which is fast and easy, truffles or peanut butter balls, bundt cake, mini cupcakes, brownies, pecan pie bars. I think bars would be faster and more efficient than something like rolled out sugar cookies or frosted and decorated types, so you could have a good assortment with less time spent. Refrigerator type cookies are good too, the kind you make ahead of time and then freeze or refrigerator, then slice and bake fresh when they are needed. You could even serve a crockpot of some type of soup or chili, if you are adventurous, with cups and spoons instead of bowls, so people could eat standing up or walking about. You could make them the way you said,just make sure you have an overlap big enough that it will close once the wreath is in it.The other way is to cut 2 circles a little larger than the wreath,then measure the circumference of the circle and cut a straight strip,also known as a gusset.Put a zipper in the gusset,zippers arent hard.Then sew each side of the gusset to one edge of each of the circles. Or you can do what o do,i just use a good strong plastic bag with handles,drop the wreath in and hang it on a rod in my storage closet.Make sure you mark the bags if your're doing them for more than one season.HTH You could even make the bags from the tablecloth you already bought,then just add a couple of BIG buttonholes to slide over the closet rod. LOL You're right, Maire_Cate. I have almost no closets in this house, no built-ins other than a couple of bookcases, and a severe shortage of storage. So what do I have? An overflowing liquor cabinet and a filled wine rack. The reason is that I like the idea of having a drink with friends, but it doesn't happen often. And I think drinking alone is no fun. I do come up with a special drink each year for my family at the holidays, but all that experimenting requires more ingredients than I'll use in the end result. As for the wine, I love searching for bargains in decent wine, but I would never open a bottle just for me. Wine doesn't keep well. So it sits there on the rack until I have guests or until (like this weekend) I bring a bottle to a party. I think another factor is that my parents always had a well-stocked liquor cabinet. They didn't drink wine, but they had lots of close friends, couples who would stop in for an evening. My dad would make Manhattans, or Tom Collinses, or serve beer, depending on the season. No one ever got drunk; it's just that the cocktail hour was a tradition in our circles in New York. My in-laws in CT did the same. But although it was what we grew up with, my DH and I didn't drink at all for about 20 years when our children were growing up. No time to "relax with a drink" with three kids in the house. I didn't learn to like good wine until about ten years ago.

Apple juice with cinnamon schnapps is a very good holiday drink. And of course there's always eggnog. Here are two recipes that are very good. Christmas Punch and Hot Buttered Rum.

Christmas Punch

1/2 cup white sugar
2 cups orange juice
2/3 cup lemon juice
1 (4 ounce) jar maraschino cherries, with juice
1 fluid ounce triple sec liqueur
1 (750 milliliter) bottle light rum
1 orange, sliced into rounds
1 lemon, sliced into rounds
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks
1 liter carbonated water

Directions
1 In a punch bowl combine sugar, orange and lemon juice, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add cherries, triple sec, light rum, orange slices, lemon slices, and pineapple chunks. Set for 1-2 hours to allow flavors to blend.
2 Add carbonated water and ice just before serving.

Hot Buttered Rum

Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 (16 ounce) package confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 pound light brown sugar, packed
1 quart vanilla ice cream, softened

Directions
1 In a large bowl cream the butter and the sugars together until smooth. Add the softened ice cream and mix until a creamy consistency is obtained. Transfer this to a freezer container with a tight fitting lid. Place in the freezer for up to 1 month.
2 To Serve: Place a heaping 2 tablespoons of the frozen mix in a highball glass or coffee mug. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons dark rum. Pour over the mix 6 ounces of boiling water and stir until the mixture is melted. Sprinkle top with cinnamon or nutmeg and serve forth!

Just had this at a party--was great.
2 large bottles Sprite
1 cup sugar
1 package kool-aide--they used the Island Twist
12oz lemonade frozen concentrate
Stir, garnish with 2 packages frozen raspberries
Vodka as desired....the Berry favored is supposed to be good in this..we just added the cheap stuff and it still was very good.
