Anyone have a Gevalia Coffeemaker?

My husband again has placed the Gevalia offer of 12 cup coffeemaker, thermal carafe and two travel mugs in front of me. We've had a Krups coffee maker the last 6 years, and have been pleased.

How does the Gevalia coffeemaker stand up against others on the market? How does it compare to other coffeemakers when brewing regular standard fare coffee?

I have heard that their coffee is good, but expensive. Which Gevalia coffees have you liked?

A few years ago, my sister gave me the Gevalia thermal carafe along with some of their coffee. I didn't continue with the monthly purchase of their coffee, it's good - a little strong, but just too expensive for my simple taste. The thermal carafe continues to work just great. I'm very happy with it.

I have owned the Gevalia coffee maker for several years. I love the thermal carafe - can make a pot and take it with me on trips, fishing, etc. The coffee maker itself operates just like any other coffee maker, except that the heating element cuts off automatically once the coffee has made. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for several hours and it doesn't get that "day old" taste that coffee will have after it sits on a hot element for any length of time. No, I do not use their coffee - did for awhile, but too expensive for regular use. My problem was not with the coffee maker but rather with the company. They would make unauthorized shipments at Christmas time, etc. And when I asked for coffee shipments to be cancelled, I would keep getting shipments. When I returned the shipments they would not give me credit. Finally I just kept refusing the shipments by writing 'REFUSED' across the shipping box. Still got billed for those shipments. Finally sent letter via registered mail, return receipt requested. I should have known...When I first ordered the coffee maker I waited for it to come for almost 2 months, then had to call and ask about it. My check had cleared ($12.00 I think it was on their special offer) They assured me it would be sent right away, which it was. Then a couple of months later, I got a second coffee maker. I called them and asked where to return it since I had a duplicate shipment. They said they had no record of it - and I kept telling the girl I didn't need a 2nd one, didn't want it. She told me if I shipped it back it would mess up their inventory. I never got billed for it, so after about a year I just gave it away. Don't know how they are now, but they were not very good at record keeping a few years ago.

If you like yor maker I would check the Gevalia online site. They usually have offers of free coffee makers if you order some of their coffee. If you already order their coffee, I would contact them online and tell them the maker quit and ask for another free one. It can't hurt. This stuff is generally disposable so I doubt if it is an easy fix.

I do not have one of these, nor any other built in "small appliances" in my own kitchen, but I do have some experience from growing up and/or living with similar in older kitchens. My parents have a built-in Nutone food center. The blender, a meat grinder, other attachments fit on a motor that is mounted in a stainless steel area on the countertop. You remove a little cap and set in the attachment. and there is a control knob set in the counter too. Very cool, except the metal piece that runs the appliance "rounded off" over the years and no longer turns the blades of the blender. Great idea, hard to service and irreversible placement in the counter. Likewise a built in paper towel holder that held 60s size towel rolls but by the late seventies they were too fat. I have been in kitchens with built in toasters, built in radios, built in ironing centers, etc none of which worked anymore and/or were not really in the right place. Just think very carefully before you decide the put in an appliance that tends to need to be replaced and can normally be replaced easily and cheaply by something off teh shelf. Spending several hundred dollars while you are in the midst of spending $30K may not seem like much but if something happens and you can get a Mr Coffee at Walmart for $29.99 when something happens to your built in, you may end up in a similar situation.

We'd take a chance on something this simple but never on the more complicated, EXPENSIVE ones. They just aren't worth it IMHO. $3000??? Miele has units, which take coffee beans and grind them afresh for you Â for about $2600 (yes, you can put the already ground coffee in too). I'm most tempted by one, but the price is holding me back. I'm also unsure of the output Â my favorite coffee-machine so far is Lavazza's Espressopoint, but they require capsules (thus limiting your coffee-choices), aren't built-in, and aren't offered to consumers Â only corporate (though eBay has them). The appliance salesman said, they have no complaints about Miele's coffee-makers, although cheaper ones are, indeed, trouble-prone, according to him...

I'm not particular at all about looks really, although that Krups linked above is pretty dang nice looking for a coffeemaker! I'm thinking black/stainless so it matches appliances. Our coffeemaker and toaster were both from Walmart. I paid $5 for the coffeemaker on clearance and $7 for the toaster. They started out white, now the toaster is yucky yellow around the slots and has scuffs that don't come clean. The coffeemaker still comes clean, but coffee on a white coffeemaker cannot be ignored for a considerable amount of time. I think it gurgles and sputters coffee out while it's going, because I wipe the stupid thing off every day, and when I get it out, there are more spots. Times and clocks aren't important. We don't use a timer now, because I put it away every day. We're hitting the time of year now where everything with a digital clock in our house is off because the power flickers at least once or twice a week, or daily when it gets even hotter. linelle- I agree about ugly toasters. The toaster isn't important enough to me to perform flawlessly, form over function here. Just make the bread crispier than when it went in and don't burn down my kitchen and look decent in the process. I'm not really that particular about my coffee either. I don't drink it for the taste, I drink it so I can function before noon and I like the smell when I open the container. We're not serious coffee drinkers. Folgers is good enough for us.

I have one of the coffe makers with the glass pot (nont thermal pot)... I've had it for probably about 3 to 4 years now. It works like any other drip coffee maker... I cancelled the shipments of coffee right after receiving the original shipment.... prices were high for the coffee... plus to be perfectly honest, I had expected I would cancel... I had been told by many friends they had done this as a way to get a "free" coffee maker.... when mine died... I did the order and then canceled...

My mother has done this twice now (talk about pushing our luck)... she has one with the thermal pot and one with a glass pot... explain to me why a single 70 year old woman needs 2 full sized coffee makers... plus a 4 cup Mr Coffee, and a separate travel mug coffee maker... ... I digress...

Order the maker and pick two coffees that sound interesting to you both... then cancel...

I got a couple of these and canceled also. I gave my daughter one, and I use the other in our guest bedroom... well, it's in there, and one guest used it once. LOL!
