Cold brewed coffee - recipe

Have you tried this?
I've been making it for a few weeks now and I think its really good for iced coffee. Less bitter then regular brewed.

What you do is get a quart jar, add 1 cup of ground coffee, fill it up with water, shake, then set it on the counter 12-15 hours. The next day strain it twice. I use a small strainer the first time then put a coffee filter in the next time. Then use about 1/4 cup of this concentrate, add milk or flavored creamer, if you need sugar you will need to use sugar water or sweet & low so it will dissolve. If you want hot coffee just add boiling water to the concentrate instead.

Here is a link that might be useful: cold brewed iced coffee

RE: Cold brewed coffee - recipe

Never heard of cold brewed coffee, but I am going to try this tonight. We rarely drink hot coffee anymore, but I make a very strong pot of coffee, doctor it up and put it in the refrigerator for DH to drink all day at work. This might be even better. Thanks.

I made this last night and strained it today, it brewed for about 15 hours. I strained with a fine pasta colander first then twice with a coffee filter. It is really smoother than the iced coffee I usually make, which is just double strength brewed coffee poured over ice or frozen coffee cubes. The flavor is good, definitely less bitter. I will try it tomorrow with boiling water in the morning. Either way, I will use it for iced coffee from now on.

Thanks for the directions and link. I've seen coffee toddy directions but didn't try it because I didn't want to use a whole pound of coffee, in case I didn't like it. This was a good way to start.

I'm intrigued. Is it a regular medium grind, like for drip coffee?

You just use regular ground coffee, or have it medium ground if you prefer. Add the grounds, then the water to the qt jar and your ready to go. I think its great! I would like to find a easier way to strain it though. I am thinking of finding a french press.

Interesting. I wonder if you tied the coffee up in cheesecloth before putting it in the water, or used a tea infuser, if it would still infuse properly. I'm gonna try to remember to make some of this tomorrow.
