new starbucks coffee makers

Has anyone tired the new starbucks coffee makers? One has a metal caftan instead of glass. It is suppost to stay hot better. Unfortuntaley, they only make the ten cup size, and my husband doesn't drink coffee. There is also one called Utopia, that has glass and a vacuum. I think they must be expensive.

If it has a floozie italian name for something as simple as a coffee maker, and it comes from starbuck's, of course it will be expensive. What good is coffee that stays warm longer in a (usually heated) coffee maker when it sits for hours on end? I would stick with glass because it imparts no taste to your coffee, and make enough so that it isn't being heated all day. Whatever product you have left at the end of the day may fall into the espresso category by then. Hopefully for your sake you will not be inundated by a long thread of starbucks bashing!!

Metal caftan -- are you talking about a thermal carafe? I've seen those at Starbucks, and I have one from Gevalia, and I love it. It keeps the coffee warm for a couple of hours at least, and since it's not sitting on a burner, like a glass carafe, it doesn't become thick, strong, and burnt-tasting. It stays fresh, as if just brewed. You can find Gevalia offers in magazines (free coffee maker if you buy 1 lb. of coffee for $10 and become a member, but there's actually no obligation, you can cancel anytime). It's a great deal, and their coffee is good, but it's just too expensive (for me) in the long run. As for Starbucks, I don't honestly think that their coffeemakers are any better quality, and hence are surely overpriced.

Bug Girl -- sorry I missed your San Francisco show! I used to live there, but didn't have cable and didn't know about cable access TV. I moved away in 1999 and then discovered cable access in Somerville, MA, where they have a great station! Now I'm living in a small New Mexico town with a very lame station. Keep up the good work!

Hi! I just wanted to give you my formula. I bought 12 plastic (3 gal.) trash baskets and I lined them with (8 gal.)bags. I drop off two lined containers in the a.m. and bring back two clean lined baskets a couple of days later in the a.m. When I pick those up, UCG and filters go in together. I make sure the trash containers are washed, rinsed and lined. after I dump them. I carry a cement plastic tub in my truck and set the cans, liners and all in the tubs. (just in case of a spill). I worked from three different coffee shops.I tipped and bought mocha or coffee regularly. This worked fine till I went on vacation for a month. My DH picked up only from his favorite coffee house and put the bags in a big pile out in the yard. I had made arrangements with the other two shops that I would be on vacation. When I got home and had to pry frozen bags off the grass and spread them out I thought I would freeze my fingers off. "Boy it was cold" After that I made arrangements to wait till spring to collect more grounds. I now have an acre of grass covered with grounds and 5 nice size lasagna beds waiting to plant. I now turn them about every month. Can't wait to get started again. In the mean time my Chiropractor saves me shredded mail and I am still collecting for the next bed. The Cement tub is always in the truck waiting in case I spy any thing I can use in my beds. I love collecting and gardening. This is very addicting!!!

Thanks for the heads up. I used to get bags of if when I was working for a auto pts. mfg. co. Had coffee machines all over the offices and factory and I had the maintenance people save them for me. Got about 2 bushels a week. But have been retired for 23 yrs now, and I drink only instance coffee. Max is 2 cups a day. Will check into this as I can sure use them when I'll be making my new hosta beds in the spring.

I agree with sbryce that you should let the coffee grounds get really moldy first before adding them to your bin. I have noticed that even in relatively low amounts, coffee grounds begin to drive worms out of the culture. This behavior persisted for 6 days till I added a layer of horse manure and sifted compost to the surface. I suspect the raw grounds are very acidic and mold action neutralizes the pH. I no longer add raw grounds or kitchen waste directly to my worms. The risk of upsetting the system is too great. Now, I choose instead to add grounds/kitchen waste to my compost pile first. Then, later adding sifted compost to the worms.

I had a great visit. Two friends from high school who are still close friends of mine. One is returning to work from maternity leave next week and wanted to get away from the house. The other is 34 weeks pregnant. I learned at Starbucks they can make ANY drink decaf. I also saw that bags you guys talked about for used coffee grounds. I thought about asking for some for our compost bin. I was having too much fun with my friends to bother with it at the time. I don't know what the new mom got, but she forgot to ask for decaf. Pregnant mom got hot chocolate. I got steamed low fat milk with hazelnut syrup. It was 8:30pm, so it was a good choice. I got my calcium and not too many calories. Steph's caramel apple cider sounds great. I may have to make another visit this fall. Thanks for everyone's input. It was fun reading through your responses.

Thank you for the tip. I use Krups but they don't last very long. They only cost 30 dollars, but I have to replace them often. I was looking for one that will last at a reasonable price.
I think it is very unfair, that public access is not free to everyone. Many people would like to get my show, but can't or won't pay the 40 dollars a month for cable. If public access is to give the public access, then it should be free for all people. The same goes for all the other people who have shows on public access in San Francisco, some of them don't even have cable themselves, but are on it any way. Isn't that ironic?

I got the Bariqta Utopia, and it does make better coffee then Krups or Mr. Coffee. The price came down almost 50 percent if you buy it on-line.
