Would wearing boots with a dress make it more casual? I have a wedding to go to and was considering wearing knee high boots with it instead of heels. What do you think? The dress is pretty casual as it is so I don't want to go even more casual. Thanks.

From what you're describing, I think dressy shoes would make your dress more suitable for a wedding. I like the look of boots with a dress, but not for an occasion like this.

LOL, yeah, I have to admit I am known to wear boots with just about everything, since I was a teenager..when I got married I wanted to wear my workboots, my dress was so long no one would have seen, but my mother was NOT happy and kept insisting I wear the stupid pretty heels. I did, but the came right off..the whole reception I was barefoot. Anytime I dress up, my family and friends expect boots of some kind, and if I'm not wearing them they are shocked. And another thing is, I hardly ever wear dresses. Wearing that one, I feel like I am naked when I go outside lol. Lucy, LMAO!! I love the big leaves brugs can get. OMG Karyn, LMAO..I'm not a hooker! I saw two bare-legged or natural colored stockings variations of this this morning. Both women were between 25 and 30, both had black boots and both were dressed in black with pretty short skirts.(several inches above the knee) 1) had a full short black skirt and an extremely voluminous 3/4 belted jacket with a very large collar and a lot of fabric. The fabric was a Japanese looking print and the cut was Japanese-inspired looking The boots were very short barely more than a shoe that was filled-in, sort of. 2) had on a short tight skirt (black) and a black tailored jacket and she had on genuine Boots that came up over the ankle a couple of inches. I think it looked fine on both of these women. But the first outfit in general would have been very unflattering on a lot of people. She had the trifecta of tall, thin and young. The second outfit was more universal, but I think it depended upon the monochromatic outfit where everything was the same color (or at least not distinctly light or lightweight on top) and I think it relied on the fair expanse of leg between the top of the boot and the hem.

Went shopping tonight and tried two different brands of boots, both a little "combat" style and both hurt my feet which I thought was odd. I think I may need to go into a high price range. Rilie, those boots are cool. So you wear pants over them and they lay ok? I like those ariat clogs and found some local stores that carry them. Funny but they are at a Tractor supply store. Going to check them out. I just sit all day at work but want comfortable shoes for times I need to walk, like in a mall of if I go somewhere. I don't want to have to change shoes everytime I go somewhere. If you're not from this area it might be hard to understand what I'm talking about. Most people here do not wear winter boots unless they are going skiing, or playing in the snow, etc. Often we just have a little snow on the ground. Not enough for boots but regular dress flats are not high enough off the ground. I'm going to dig out some older booties I have and see if I can have them repaired. They were so comfortable, now if I can find them..... funnyart, I used to be a librarian! They do look comfortable.

Since it's a very casual knit dress that "appears" to have weight, I love the idea of black tights with a higher, mid-heel, dressier boot. While I'm a big shrug wearer with short sleeve tops/dresses (for warmth) and to alleviate added bulk where it doesn't belong, I'm not liking a shrug with your knit dress. You could get away with a waist length cardigan and just button the two middle buttons to accentuate a waistline, but the neckline of the cardigan should be rounded not squared, IMO. Details, details. Not sure what the event is, but something to consider is wearing a piece that you can take off (hence the sweater or jacket), in case you get warm as oppose to a long sleeve top underneath. But, without knowing your build type, it's tough to put together to ensure it looks polished on your frame. I'm very particular about things fitting the right body type form head to toe, but that's just me.

Well...then again,is it a really casual wedding? I have been to some where anything goes and some people wear jeans.If it is casual it might be ok...if it is more formal,then I would go with heels or flats instead of boots.

And some boots are fairly dressy (stiletto with sleek leather and pointy toe) so it's not a given either way.

depends on the boots, depends on the dress, depends on the wedding party...and definately depends on the weather, since dress shoes with frost-bitten toes is never fun ;)

you can dress a less than formal outfit up by dressing YOU up - hair done, lips lined, nails coordinating, better jewelry, maybe a fancy shawl/throw/silk scarf?

OMG ... I just saw this thread. I attended a wedding the week before Christmas and wore a pair of winter white (cream colored) boots paired with a houndstooth jumper and charmeuse blouse. The jumper is fitted and the blouse has a nice attached bow so I think the look was not too casual. As someone mentioned previously the boots need to be "dressy" to really make it work, mine have a pretty high-heel 3.5". It was a day time wedding and I think it worked well. But I was sure glad to take the heels off after a couple of hours at the reception!
