Needle Felted Yard Mannequin?
Comments (4)Hello, What an ambitious undertaking! Wool can certainly stand up to the elements as demonstrated by the yurts built by Mongol nomads. Obviously you have experience making human figures--your wooly shepherd is marvelously handsome! I think there is a life-sized human figure in Sherri Wagner-Hunter's first book MAKING CONCRETE GARDEN ORNAMENTS. I can't put my hands on my copy at the moment but I recall that it is a combination of media, concrete, terra cotta, mosaic a straw hat and perhaps other things. If I recall correctly there are no directions, just photos. Some time ago some members here made a number of those type figures and referred to them as "garden ladies". Maybe try searching the forums here and elsewhere, especially the hypertufa and mosaics forums. Sometimes one can find links in odd places for ideas and suggestions. It sounds like you are at the planning stage and looking mostly for ideas? I would certainly make up a sample felted piece and leave it outside to see how it will hold up. If it is hard, tight felting it should weather well. What is your weather like? If your location is fairly dry it will weather even better. I would think that the Pacific Northwest area would have the felt growing green stuff that would eventually weaken the fibers. I hope you will keep us all up to date on your progress with your wonderful ambitious project. Best regards, spiderwoman (I'm a handspinning shepherd, not an arachnid lover in case you're curious)...See MoreStraight hair..hot rollers?
Comments (19)Ponder I am curious about what you said The rule of thumb for curlers. If you go around the hair more than 11/2 times it will reverse direction and do it's own thing when you let it out. Do you mean not to turn the curling iron more then 1 and half times?? I think thats what you are saying but I've never had that trouble controling it. If I want to curl your hair under I face the clip one way and if I want to curl it out it faces the other way. I'm not trying to be rude in anyway, I hope you don't take it that way! Just curious. I usually use big hot rollers for body and then let it cool and then finish up with a curling iron to help it go in the direction I want it. Then after that round cools I go to it with my round brush. I find this way last a lot longer then blowing it out with the round brush. Atleast for my hair! I love my ceramic curling iron! It heats up so fast and so even!...See MoreWaves and curls..WOW
Comments (4)I bought it at a beauty supply store. I am not sure why it works, but it is steam that heats up the foam rollers and then the plastic covering seems to hold the roller and the steam in til it is cool. Because my hair is so straight, the cover holds the hair in place and firmly around the foam roller and prevents the hair from unrolling. I did try it the next day, and yep, it still works....See MoreFor MCM fans...
Comments (14)Somewhere around my house I still have one of those metal 'marcel' clips my mother used to use. Like technicolor mentioned, my mother used to wrap my hair in scrap fabric in mostly failed attempts to make those sausage curls in my stick-straight hair, somewhere in the mid 50s. I also remember those pink plastic and metal skinny rollers olychick posted. In the 60s we used to use stale beer to set our hair with those mesh rollers, using roller papers and clips. I had one of those bonnet hair dryers which came with a shoulder strap; however, because you still needed to be plugged into an electrical outlet, you could move only so far. Despite all the rollings and setting lotions my hair never held a curl or wave for longer than half an hour. I finally got a hand-held hair blower in the mid-70s and have never looked back. Thank goodness they've gotten much lighter and easier to handle over the years....See Moremitchdesj
