Japanese hair straightening

I just had to share this with all of you who are tired of fighting with curly, weather-temperamental hair-- I had this done eight months ago and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT. Worth every penny!

What joy not to have to do any styling except a comb out after the shower! What happiness to have sleek smooth hair that doesn't change a bit when i go out in the rain!

Just a couple of warnings: You can't do it if you've bleached your hair, be sure you get a stylist who is well trained since its very technical, AND be prepared to look like an egg for the first week until some of the body comes back...

How often does it need to be redone?

It depends on how fast your hair grows, and your hairstyle. The hair that has been straightened never changes, its just the new growth that has to be done.

I was able to go for 8 months before i did it again. In that time my hair grew about 6 inches -- most of the new growth blended well and i could have gone longer but my bangs were driving me nuts.

YH, my daughter just bought one of these and says everyone is using them these days; I just can't figure out what it does. She has a kind of spiked hairdo on top, with shaved sides, she straightens up the top part before gelling it with paste, it stays "up" better... She has curly hair so I'm assuming you do too......

I went in for my 'consult'. My hair is just a bit below my shoulder and quite thick. Price: $425. Ouch. Here's what I was told; no washing for 3 days, no pulling hair back, no tucking behind ears, no sunglasses flipped up on head (that one is really tough for me!) and then use special shampoo with no, um - something sulfate? I can't remember but they said it's readily available and no need to buy their brand, and be sure to color my hair BEFORE the procedure because it actually helps to seal in the color. I forgot to ask what coloring after the fact is like because I color every 4 weeks. During those 3 days, any curve, curl or kink in my hair from sleeping or whatever needs to be ironed out. Regarding what I could expect; will last 3 - 4 months, does not grow out in the way that chemical or Japanese straightening does but more or less 'wears off', will make my hair very shiney and healthy. What it will NOT do is make my hair totally stick straight but it will eliminate frizz. It also will not mean that I am blow dryer or flat iron free but that could be based on hair type. She told me I will be able to wash, comb, then pul my hair back in a pony and it will remain smooth, something I've never been able to do. But if I want some semblance of a 'style' it will require blowing it out as I do now but will require far less work to get it smooth. I'd love to try it but the price is stopping me. If it was $300 and I had it done at the beginning of the summer I could maybe justify it. I'm sure there are other places here that do it (I'm in the Chicago suburbs) but this is the only one I know of. And this isn't a technique I want done by a newbie - this gal has been at it 8 months and has done hundreds of heads.

I don't think she paid by credit card. How did you pay? Did you just provide bank info so they could debit your account? I would check with your bank on how you could handle. You may also be able to check the consumer laws for your specific purchase. If items aren't rec'vd within a certain time, etc. I think you have the right to cancel your order (although it may be longer than 4 weeks); I'm sure you can find some info on line. You shouldn't have to eat $157, and reporting it to 'groups' will only take a lot of time and probably not do all that much. I'd stick with the BBB if you really want to file a formal complaint - but be ready to provide a lot of info.

i would stake for the reason that i might break the graft off ... put is in full bright shade.. and grow the plant.. and plant it in fall when its dormant.. so you wont have to worry about acclimating leaves to full sun ....... unless you have vast experience wintering over pots.. where ever you may be ... if you want.. at planting.. you could plant the root mass slightly askew to make it appear a bit straighter .. but as gal said.. part of the beauty of JMs is their rather free form way of growing ... if you wanted a straight tree .. you could have gone with any of the boring hardwood trees ... its not like you plan on limbing it up to 15 feet so you can put a tree tire or swing on it ... its a tree.. they grow in tree time.. counted in decades ... and this should last decades.. if you dont love it to death now ... and btw.. when you plant it in the ground... protect from vermin ... and put a giant marker stake near to it.. so you dont walk on it during the winter ... so you know where it is.. if you live in snow country.. and tromp around your garden ... i hope that pot has drainage.. and learn how to water it like a tree.. and good deep drink.. and then near drying before the next sip ... cant quite tell what media you used ... but dont water it like some water loving perennial.. its a tree ...babe or not .... ken

I've had it done twice and will continue to get it done. However, my natural hair is more frizzy than curly or wavy. I still have to section it and "straighten" it as I blow dry it while pulling it straight with a brush. If I just let it dry, it's still just a mass of frizz. However, with JHS, it STAYS straight after it's blown dry and humidity doesn't make it frizz. I was hoping it would go from wet to straight on it's own but was disappointed it won't. Has anyone else had this experience with JHS and their hair? I'ms wondering if it's the product my salon uses and if there is a more effective professional product or process?

Thermal reconditioning (Japanese hair straightening) can be very damaging to fine hair, fyi. An alternative is to find a salon that does relaxing... a less harsh process that gets rid of the frizzies but leaves some body in your straighter hair.

My hair is fine textured-- and the treatment has left it very soft and smooth. I think so much depends on the skill of the technician -- its really a craft to do it properly.

Lov2Garden: My hair goes from wet to straight and shiny-- zero frizz -- without my having to do anything to it. It was VERY curly before the treatment, and frizz prone. Now i never get any frizz no matter what the weather. My stylist used the "Perfect Straight" system -- maybe its a more effective system?

This is a really old thread, but why not build on what you've got?

So we have an endorsement for the Perfect Straight system.

The hairdessers around me in Michigan seem to all use Bio-Ionic. Does anybody know whether that system gives wet to straight and shiny with zero frizz?

I have wavy hair, fine textured hair which folds and bends easily. I often wake up with it bent out of shape. Do you wake up straight and shiny?

Has your hair stayed very flat and close to your head with little lift or bounce?

Do you have to blow dry?

I've seen some after pictures where there appears to be tiny little kinks in the hair, and not a lot of shine. Anybody had that result?

I have had mine done for the past 3 years and wouldn't have it any other way. I pay $300.00 every 9-12 months. Get out of the shower, comb and go. I used to spend 1 hour daily on my hair trying to fight the frizz, and now I spend 1 minute combing and let it airdry. Most amazing hair treatment I've ever had. It's also called Thermal reconditioning.
