We have this problem a lot with our foals chewing their mama's tails, or with yearlings chewing each other's tails. Right now, we've been using a spray product called "McNasty," which you can get online at Valley Vet, or probably at PetSmart if you have one nearby. It's essentially pepper spray, and you spray it in their tail every couple of days. Before I discovered McNasty, I used a concoction of fish oil mixed with cayenne. It stays in a little longer, but is messier to deal with, and the fish oil will make their tails goop up in dreadlocks, which you then have to detangle if you want them to look good for a show or something. I've also heard of using spray deoderant in their tails. I've never done it, but my friend swears by spraying Arrid XX in tails, and also sprays it on halters if there is a pasture mate chewing on chin straps, fly masks, etc.

Long (bottle) blond hair on women seems to be socially required around here. I see many women who've missed the 'cut off' date for that look (blond or not). When Mom poses with her HS or college-age daughter, and they have the same hair-extension look...really time to let it go, Mom. I dislike the five o'clock shadow sported by some men. It's prevalent in advertising -- along with gender-confusion. I used to see that on high school boys eager to display their new 'maleness'. Our DS laughs as DH and I roll our eyes at his various styles of beards. He looks best to me with a haircut and freshly shaven. He and his BIL used to compete for bizarre hair cuts, and lengths, and *colors*. I like to see people who are well-groomed in styles appropriate to their ages. They're self confident. They don't need to display anything to be noticed. They are past adolescent rebellion.

Maybe hair styles are like politics: Local. That comes to mind because we just flew to and from Maui via Dallas. We saw a wide range of hair and dress styles on our flights and in the airports. I agree with Elmer in liking a 'whole-person' look that is simple, neat, smooth, and not 'fussy' -- on men and on women. It's sometimes called looking 'put together'. HS boys sport sparse whiskers to 'look manly'. HS girls buy every 'beauty' product in the drugstore to needlessly decorate their beautiful young selves. The same insecurities often result in balding men who add facial hair and 'locks' down the backs of their necks -- and ladies with flowing manes who turn their heads and shock you with their surgically stretched faces. 'Simple' doesn't mean childish-- like the haggard country and western singer in a full skirt with her hair hanging down her back, a caricature of the weepy girls in her songs. There is such a thing as the general perception of 'age appropriate' and 'occasion appropriate' in hair styles as well as clothing. Hair styling is one way to 'age' an actresses in a story. In "Victoria", the unformed girl is presented with long hair held back with an Alice band...and she skips and runs. Ah, but to be perceived as more than a child, she 'puts her hair up'...and she walks with poise. Women didn't cut their hair in that time, but today they still 'put their hair up', by sleeking it close to the head. The high 'pony tail' that flips around in youth is fastened at the nape, becomes a chignon -- or is cut. The visual is no longer childish, *girlish*, but adult -- often adult in the workplace. How a woman wears her hair in bed is a whole 'nother story. Were I a man, I'd hope my lover would save her most *attractive* style for me.

I have always had coarse/frizzy, and very thick, hair which is not the same as curly/frizzy hair. The best way for me to tame it is to blow it completely dry. That works mostly fine in the winter, but in summer/humid weather, I need to use product. For my hair, Straight Works by Paul Mitchell gives me the smooth shine. It‘s put on while hair is damp and then blown dry. I’m only 52 but have a lot of gray and my hair grows very fast which means coloring my roots every four weeks. I have no desire at my age, especially since I still have kids at home, to go gray, even though it’s becoming more trendy. I’ve noticed that as I get closer to time for coloring, the texture of my hair gets coarser, so I have started using Straight Works more often in the winter. My daughter, who also has very thick, coarse hair that is also curly/wavy sometimes uses It‘s a 10 that has been mentioned above.
