Kay Gray Grape training question Pictures
Comments (3)There are many different ways to train grape vines, usually a grower will determine the best method based on variety and climactic conditions. I'm not familiar with Kay Gray and I am not sure where you are from, so it is hard to give advice. I'm guessing you are in zone 5 (would help to know where) and Kay Gray is a cold hardy variety? I prefer to grow the cordons low (like your pictures) and allow the canes to grow up to the top wire (VSP method). I grow mostly vinifera grapes, so they are more suited to that method. Usually labrusca (American) grapes have trunks up to the top wire and the canes hang down. Sometimes one trunk is used, sometimes two. Looks like I am not really answering any of your questions - the accurate answer is "it depends". One thing I notice in your photos is that the trunk is not straight (has a severe bend). That is usually not desirable because straight trunks help support some of the weight of the vines. It may work ok for you, but make sure it is securely attached to the trellis and that the trellis is very sturdy. Mature vines with a full fruit load can be very heavy. Finally, here is an article on grape growing that may answer some of your questions and it has some useful pictures: Here is a link that might be useful: Grape Growing...See MoreFound any good new-to-you online nurseries?
Comments (34)This is where I go to purchase plants.Russell Garden wholesale.I'm an 1 1/2 hrs away and believe me its worth the drive.Especially if two people go and you share the gas. Don'T take to many people in your car. Believe me you will want to fill your car after you see the prices. Be aware there is another Russell's near by they are only annuals, This is the link for perennials. I dont think you can order online unless your a business, but you can shop there, anyone can. You can buy one plant or dozens. their prices & quality are very good. Some plants have already over wintered so the root system is strong. One thing to watch for is plants dying off and going out of season. If they are re-seeders they might not come back. In our local shops, I would pay 15.00 for the same plant I pay 5.00 at Russells. Comments (20)I must have suffered a run of very bad fortune or my seed must not have been true. I tried Stupice 2 years in a row in the late 90's. Very stunted little plants, very susceptible to foliage desease, a few tomatoes hardly worth the effort and certainly not tasty, then the two plants died each year. So in 2003 I traded for and then planted some Bloody Butcher and Matina seeds. Grew two plants each in both 2003 and 2004. Both varieties grew better than the Stupice and actually had a goodly number of tomatoes. But in both years they would not fully ripen and almost invariably had green tops and also green inside at the top. If I tried to fully ripen them they would over ripen on the bottom and go quickly to rot. Matina seemed to be a bit more of a grower than Bloody Butcher, but I noted both were very susceptible to early blight. I wonder in retrospect if I might have gotten crossed or otherwise substandard seed in my trades. It's too late for 2009 to try them again but maybe next year I will have another go at them. Far too many good reports to discount them at this point. Looking for the Holy Grail in an early tomato has been an ongoing hunt for many many years. I have tried many varieties. By far the two that have performed the best for me are Early Cascade and Early Girl, the latter giving the largest and most desirable fruit. But the hunt goes on and this year I am trialing Early Goliath, Super Marmande, and Jetsonic. Also I planted 4 Ultimate Openers which my past experience indicates to be a fair 75 day tomato rather than the 57 day tomato as advertised. These will all go as give aways set out on the front porch of the VFW in mid May....See MoreHappy Birthday Kay-Luvs
Comments (21)Thanks OA and Lynne, I've been enjoying my birthday all week! Another friend came over yesterday and we loaded up some plants and our old dog house. I've been trying to give away all the potted plants so I don't have to worry about them when we take our long motor home trips. She's going to come back and take a few more plants and a garden bench that needs repairs too. We went for lunch, then hit a few TS. I got some neat stuff, but not tablescape things. It does seeem that we have lots of forum birthdays this month! Luvs...See Morebud_wi
