twisted silver chain

When I was in Poland a friend gave me a silver chain with a pendant. She told me (in sign language!) to carefully put it back in the box, gently, after every wearing. Well, one day I was in a hurry and I didn't. I travelled with it. Now, this fine silver chain has kinks in it. They don't come out, I can't seem to straighten it. What should I do??? Do you know what I'm talking about? Thanks!

What kind of links are they? Links could just be asquew. (Sp?) I have an s-link that happens to. Start at one end and carefully work through. You could tape it to cardboard as you work through it to keep the fixed bit separate from the tangle. If there are circular or oval links, I carefully work through it with a straight pin.

I have heard, that if you put a little bit of oil in a shallow dish, you can work it then with a couple straight pins. Make the links a little slippery and helps to untangle.

Your best bet would be to go to a saw shop and pay the guy to sharpen the chain. Perhaps at the same time he would show you how to remove the chain. Don't take this next statement wrong. I'm a little skeptical of you having a chain saw at all if you cannot figure out oil/gas ratios and chain removal on your own without going to the internet. If this is indicative of your knowledge of chain saws then there is a high likelihood that you will be inquiring in the very near future about amputations and wound care. Help identify twisted tree - Hathersage

The trees on this slope do lead down to Padley Gorge - and the walk up it is as pretty as it seems. There are 3 huge sessile oaks lining a neighbours garden (75-85ft high) - using a book of British & European trees I identified them from their slightly elongated version of a traditional oak leaf but the book, like so many others I guess, doesn't give much guidance on identifying trees without leaves and most of the pictures are of mature trees, there is a very limited list of buds in this book that can be identify but I didn't take any close up photos. Thanks for the suggestion - maybe they are young sessile oaks - I wondered if the acid soil for the purple heather and silver birch on the moors at the top gave any suggestion as to the soil type on the slopes - it's mossy on these wooded slopes around the stream and gritstone definitely dominates the region.

I am not a fan of accent walls.(.what are you accenting?) except for the wall behind the headboard. I can’t make that decision for you as you have not talked about your furniture, style, color.. Assuming you have no furniture, there is this gorgeous dark brown, almost black, color which would look great in the bedroom. B.M black bean soup. I just used it in a client’s dressing room…a winner. As for your office, if you have floor to ceiling built-ins, those can be another color, as there is something to accent. If not…paint all the walls one color and do some colorful rug for the floor.

Thanks to both of you for your replies! I had never thought of working it out with a straight pin. My camera is on the blink so can't photograph it. It's a very fine chain. I will try to work on it myself following these suggestions.

Red is right, use baby oil or WD40. And don't pull on it.

I've used corn starch with good success. Cover the chain with some and then work it gently into the chain. Use the pin if you need to loosen it a bit and then work the starch in. Gently untangle from there.

Just read in Hints from Heloise that to keep the chain from tangling after you get it all worked out, wrap it around a foam hair roller. (I guess there are still some foam hair rollers out there?)

I usually put my chain necklaces in a small plastic bag with the pendent or the clasp hanging out....They do not seem to tangle that way. I agree taking a straight pin to detangle your chain shoud work. If ALL else fails, take it to your jeweler and see if they can help.
