To polish, or not to polish

Because of my job I don't wear colored polish on my fingernails. My nails are natural and I keep them well manicured. I was always using a clear or base coat of polish on them, but my nails started to yellow, so I stopped using anything. Yesterday I read that you should always keep some kind of polish on your nails to protect them. Is this true? Was I just using the wrong kind of polish?

Because I garden so much I finally gave up polishing my nails. I just mess it up too quickly.

However my nails grow so fast that it is hard to keep them short so I let them grow to a moderate length and I keep them buffed to a nice shine. I don't know what you call the 'file' that I use but I get it at Sally's Beauty Supply and it has 4 different surfaces. I use all four and it gives them a nice enough shine that they almost look polished. Occasionally I dip them in bleach but normally they stay a nice healthy color.

My nails are somewhat weak and tend to split, so I use Nailtiques (#2)which really protects and strengthens them. I use my hands a lot in my work, in and out of water, etc. Nailtiques does not yellow, however it's about $10 a bottle. I think it's worth it.

You are correct. Nickel has a warmer tone and chrome has a cooler blue tone. I have polished nickel in my kitchen and it is more difficult to keep nice. I didn't know when I bought it but learned after the fact - nickel is a living metal (like silver). It will tarnish. It is also more difficult to clean than silver (silver polish isn't strong enough to clean it). I use a metal cleaner periodically on it. I do prefer the tone of nickel but not the maintenance.

My master bathroom has white cabinets , Carrara marble floors and counters all fixtures are polished nickel …i think they are a little ore upkeep than the chrome, but love the color. I need to change out my shower head…any opinions on using a chrome or satin nickel shower head even though the shower trim is polished nickel? I never wipe off my showerhead except when i clean the bathroom…lol

That’s happened to a light fixture and a clock I own. On kitchen pulls, I’d replace the whole lot with another finish for a permanent trouble free solution.

The use of polished porcelain tile in showers is extremely common. That's almost all you see in fact. Some people like a matte finish - it's just a matter of preference. Porcelain tile is extremely durable and the shine does not wear off unless you deliberately try to dull it with some very caustic chemicals. It does not become dull under normal use. To be 100% sure about what you're buying, ask the vendor about the characteristics of the product you're interested in. Anything with a handpainted design could be less durable.

sjt2900 try lightly buffing your nails with solar oil. Polish does protect your nails.

Nope, no smoking. Quit that years ago. Where would I find solar oil? Is Nailtiques available at beauty supply stores?

I saw Nailtiques at Walgreen's this week, and Ulta carries both Nailtiques and Solar Oil. I think Trade Secret carries them both also.

I think DrugStore.com sells solar oil.
