Going gray, color or not?
Comments (45)I can't remember when I started going gray but it was in my early 50's. I am 63 now. I love it ! I knew I was going to have the same wings of contrast as my Mom had because the natural highlights of gray/dark started right from the beginning. Her hair was completely white/gray when she passed at 88 and my Dad's was also at 92. Mine keeps getting more and more gray in the front but I love the contrast with my tan and blue eyes. I have never added color. I don't wear makeup at all as I SWEAT way too much and am out there on my bike or swimming or running LOL. Would be a mess. On a rare occasion I do put on mascara...waterproof :) I get a "buzz" cut with the #2 blade right before I leave on a cycling tour. I got one right after this pic was made so this shows my hair when it is long..for me anyway. I will get one the end of May before DH and I leave on our next tour in Europe. Since we will be gone 2 1/2 months I will have some interesting experiences to report as far as haircuts in France and the Netherlands . I get it cut every 3-4 weeks here at home . I think the main theme that has come out in this thread is "to each her own". What works for one woman definitely won't work for all. We are all so different and our hair and lifestyle reflect it. It is wonderful that there are so many options . And after all..it IS only hair. It grows back....See MoreMy greying Ipe deck is making me go grey too!
Comments (5)I'm completely on fence. My deck is a main feature of house. After 10 years of mostly deferred maintenance, it's been pressure washed and sanded lightly and wow it is gorgeous. Muted grey, tan, blonde boards. I think is has an elegance. I have flipped a few board and tried sampling some stains - from Red Mahogany, to clear and even the clear really darkens it and it seem to lose the elegance. I would hate to get a mosaic of colors that aren't blending in the zone. Too bold would not fit with my 96 year old bungalow. Patina rules. Sure wish I could find a finish that would add mildew and uv protection without changing the patina color. Clear twp is just as dark as Penofin, ipe Brazilian oil stain or the rMesmers red mahogany. I don't get it. I think the scratch marks will be more visible if you have a stain because it will drag below the very surficial stain. Not much really penetrates deeply so you'd have lighter wood revealed in the scratch.....See MoreAnyone else ready to cry, scream, or give up? Contractor venting here!
Comments (39)Ok. I actually know this one. (Anyone not looking to know about Acrylpro should skip this whole entry.) If your tile is larger than 6x6 you cannot use Acrylpro over redgaurd. Period. Really. Even according to the people that make it. Redguard (a waterproofing membrane) and Acrylpro are both made by custom building products. From the horse's mouth ... You can find that under "technical/installation" and here's the link ... http://www.custombuildingproducts.com/products/setting-materials/mastics-adhesives/acrylpro-ceramic-tile-adhesive.aspx# And here's the phone number ... Notice it states you can use it on tile up to 8" but that isn't when used over redgaurd, as you can tell in the first screen capture. I had 6x24 tile. When I mentioned we can't use Acrylpro my guy said, "what do you do all day?" "I do it all the time and it's never been a problem." I showed him the screen capture and it stopped him in his tracks. He just said, "what do you want me to use instead." That's when I called the helpline. You need to use a MODIFIED thinset - one that comes in a powder form and you have to mix it. Here's what I texted my guy ... We didn't get the brand they quoted but my guy took it to heart and read the fine print and brought back the only thinset at HD that was rated for large tile. More from the help line (I called back three times and each guy was great) ... "Anything pre-mixed in a bucket is mastic, not thinset. Any contractor knows this." (No, they don't.) "If you have redgaurd and large tile it's like sticking the lid on the bucket and the Acrylpro won't dry." (Or like water between two sheets of plastic.) "Thinset cures chemically." (Aaaah, that's why.) Google thinset vs. mastic. Or don't because it will freak you out that your guy is even considering using mastic. You might also want to ask what kind of grout he's going to use since there's new grout that doesn't need to be sealed and won't stain or grow mold....See MoreNeed help choosing light gray color to go with reddish orange floors!
Comments (51)I bought 5 samples today, one of them was a white for trim so just 4 for the walls. After considering what I already have, I decided to pick ones that had different undertones. As an example, I didn't get Horizon, b/c it's so close to Paper White, and i have that color in two rooms in my current house. It's pretty, but it definitely reads blue. I think this is partly due to my trim being Snowfall White, which is very close to Simply White. I think with a truer white it might appear a little more gray, although still cool. I ended up with Intense White, which is actually what I had wanted to use in one room instead of the Paper White. Also got Shoreline 1471, which reads a little more gray than Horizon, although I feel like the purple will come out I wanted to make sure. Also got Classic Gray ElleN, I'm going to give it one more shot. And Swiss Coffee, b/c my sample is so old for that one. I feel like with what I have and the new, I should definitely be able to come up with something. I buy these small flat canvases at Walmart in a 3 pack and they work amazing for paint samples. I have found that even foam board can curl pretty easily, and I'm not a fan of painting directly on the wall anymore, have screwed that up too many times. ElleN I agree Halo is very green, so I don't think it will do me any favors. And Gray Mist is not a very fun color, but I can't believe it looked so yellow on your walls. I think you're right, they might have mixed something wrong. Here's a couple of pics of our old kitchen with it. It was a great neutral with the floors, cabinets and countertops....See Moreamck2
