I give up going for heavy chemicals
Comments (5)I am aware of how/why ammonia works(THANK YOU KEN), so of course I am only spraying on the ones I see, and I see PLENTY! My yard is shady, moist and cool enough this week they are out ALL DANG DAY, munching away. I have been bolstered by the fact I only see very small ones in my Hosta. I am hoping that means I am dealing with newly hatched and soon they will all be gone too. My vegi garden is another story. As I replanted I dug up many huge,(thumb nail size) adult slugs. Yes metaldehyde was the chemical I was trying to think of. I find Otho's Get-a bug to be the best. I like the pellets, apply every 6 weeks, but no one in my town sells it anymore. I have googled until my fingers are raw and cannot find a place to purchase and send me some that doesn't have prohibitively expensive price then I add plus shipping to that and I need a second mortgage on my home. I would be interested in guidance in on line buying and have asked here before, but have not been blessed with a response. I even asked a co-worker who does landscaping every summer if he knew of a wholesale source and that got me no where. I went to ammonia last year as my beds were under control slug wise, spraying after a rain early in the morning seemed to take care of the few that wandered into my gardens, but I have some newer beds that seem to be infested and ammonia alone is not doing the trick. If anyone has an affordable source I would REALLY appreciate directions to it....See MoreWhen to give up on a Market and quit going?
Comments (17)Jay, You have to stay as far away from the politics as you can. These negative people will just bring you down. In the early days of my nursery business I started out at a farmers market selling herbs so I could get people to my nursery. It worked and I stopped selling at the farmers market. I have since retired. Most of the folks at my local market had their own farm location, and sold at the farmers market just to entice people to their farms. The market isnÂt where they planned to make their total income. Here are just two folks who started at the market and then left to run a successful market. Tabora Farm started out selling fruit from their orchard and now has an excellent market at their own farm. The wife baked pies to use up some of their harvest and now theyÂre known for their wonderful pies. http://www.taborafarmandorchard.com/store/ These folks use to bake bread in their basement, and now they have one of the best bread bakeries in town. http://www.crossroadsbakeshop.com/ Another women made and sold jellies and muffins until a local Bed and Breakfast asked her to sell some to them on a regular basis. She found out that other B&BÂs were also interested. She has since retired. I could list dozens of success stories. The secret is to compete only with yourself, and to stay away from the bickering and gossip. Anyone who is doing this is not making money. Good luck, and keep up the good work....See MoreGoing gray, color or not?
Comments (45)I can't remember when I started going gray but it was in my early 50's. I am 63 now. I love it ! I knew I was going to have the same wings of contrast as my Mom had because the natural highlights of gray/dark started right from the beginning. Her hair was completely white/gray when she passed at 88 and my Dad's was also at 92. Mine keeps getting more and more gray in the front but I love the contrast with my tan and blue eyes. I have never added color. I don't wear makeup at all as I SWEAT way too much and am out there on my bike or swimming or running LOL. Would be a mess. On a rare occasion I do put on mascara...waterproof :) I get a "buzz" cut with the #2 blade right before I leave on a cycling tour. I got one right after this pic was made so this shows my hair when it is long..for me anyway. I will get one the end of May before DH and I leave on our next tour in Europe. Since we will be gone 2 1/2 months I will have some interesting experiences to report as far as haircuts in France and the Netherlands . I get it cut every 3-4 weeks here at home . I think the main theme that has come out in this thread is "to each her own". What works for one woman definitely won't work for all. We are all so different and our hair and lifestyle reflect it. It is wonderful that there are so many options . And after all..it IS only hair. It grows back....See MoreI give up! I'm just going to buy bell pepper plants
Comments (13)I finally got some of my greek pepper seeds to sprout! I don't use seed mix ... I just strain my potting soil and use that and haven't had any mold issues. I put sandwich baggies over each starter pot and put them on the back porch. The idea just popped into my head the other night and it's working. It's keeping them so much warmer than not being covered. I may get some peppers by Christmas. lol I feel your pain Dirty ... I have auto immune syndrome ... my doc is skirting the word lupus for the moment. I know how it feels to have a good day and then feel like a truck ran over you the next. Gardening and nature help me to keep my spirits up. So sorry to hear about your health issue Greenthumbs ... sending good vibes your way. :)...See Moreamck2
