secrets to composting (don't tell anyone cuz they are secrets)
Comments (41)If that soil in that geographical area doesn't have ANY worms and shouldn't have any worms because of naturally occurring conditions, then fine, it could be good soil without them,(and good for what?) but I find it hard to believe that there is soil that supports other insect life and plant life devoid of ANY type worms anywhere. And when I say worms, I mean just that, worms, not worm I.E. Eisenia foetida, there are many types of worms on this earth and as long as there is one type of life, there is almost always another. I have found that when a GARDEN is devoid of worms there is a reason. On the compost farm, I searched for weeks for Eisenia foetida and found none, I did find worms in the soil near by,(about 1/4 mile away) but not many. on the farm the soil was tilled and and compacted and all manner of farm chemicals were used for decades before I got there and I am sure this had a effect on all the life that would/could occupy that area. I would also say that if an area is completely devoid of ants or spiders or beetles/grubs or mice or rats or whateva that would naturally occur and if it is devoid of those creatures because of something happening, usually humans can be connected to the absence. AND I am not saying that Eisenia foetida are pure good creature that do no harm, imho they are just another example of an invasive species just trying to live and prosper like good ole Darwin sez. Just my two cents plus a nickle. IALBTC Here is a link that might be useful: A Note on Invasive Worm Species...See Moresaucerful of secrets and others.
Comments (13)Your lake picture reminded me of Yeats' "Wild Swans at Coole." It isn't October yet, but your water mirrors a still sky. Our woodland paths here are not dry. Yeats wrote this in 1916, when he was 51. The Wild Swans at Coole THE TREES are in their autumn beauty, The woodland paths are dry, Under the October twilight the water Mirrors a still sky; Upon the brimming water among the stones Are nine and fifty swans. The nineteenth Autumn has come upon me Since I first made my count; I saw, before I had well finished, All suddenly mount And scatter wheeling in great broken rings Upon their clamorous wings. I have looked upon those brilliant creatures, And now my heart is sore. All’s changed since I, hearing at twilight, The first time on this shore, The bell-beat of their wings above my head, Trod with a lighter tread. Unwearied still, lover by lover, They paddle in the cold, Companionable streams or climb the air; Their hearts have not grown old; Passion or conquest, wander where they will, Attend upon them still. But now they drift on the still water Mysterious, beautiful; Among what rushes will they build, By what lake’s edge or pool Delight men’s eyes, when I awake some day To find they have flown away?...See MoreHAVE: Deep Secret/Maggie/Sharifa Asma/S. Comments (5)Hi Patty, I couldn't wait and bought Buff Beauty while Heirloom Roses had it on sale, but I can still give you cuttings of Maggie. It's just that Maggie is first year in my yard and I haven't let it bloom yet, do you think a cutting with a bud formed is just as good? I never trade cuttings before so if you are interested, let me know how do I do it. I live in Dyker Heights. If you live nearby I might give you the whole plant, because now I want a fruit tree in that spot (sigh...too little space...) Thanks for your interest, Chi...See MoreBlue Bonnet Secret(s)?
Comments (8)it might be that your soil doesn't have the rhizobium that it needs. You can acquire that from the lady bird johnson site or fromWe are pretty alkaline here in the Austin area but we do have different varieties of Texas Blubonnets. 5 in all. I have included the propagation page on Tx. Blue bonnets that you might find helpful . I have also included the lady bird Johnson's wildflower site . You can go ask mr. Smarty pants. He answers questions from all over the country. Blue bonnets grows on clays to the east of central Texas and the sands that are also to the easts of us. but they might be a different species. They have a cool plant data base and you can go in it and get to the another site at the bottom of the plant pages that will show you where the different species ranges are. What kind of soil do you have and what is your annual rainfall? Sometimes it takes several years of planting the seed to get a recurring patch. Not all the seeds will sprout the first year. http://www.wildflower.org/clearinghouse/propagation/Lupinus_texensis.pdf http://www.wildflower.org/expert/...See Morepeachieone
