secrets to composting (don't tell anyone cuz they are secrets)
Comments (41)If that soil in that geographical area doesn't have ANY worms and shouldn't have any worms because of naturally occurring conditions, then fine, it could be good soil without them,(and good for what?) but I find it hard to believe that there is soil that supports other insect life and plant life devoid of ANY type worms anywhere. And when I say worms, I mean just that, worms, not worm I.E. Eisenia foetida, there are many types of worms on this earth and as long as there is one type of life, there is almost always another. I have found that when a GARDEN is devoid of worms there is a reason. On the compost farm, I searched for weeks for Eisenia foetida and found none, I did find worms in the soil near by,(about 1/4 mile away) but not many. on the farm the soil was tilled and and compacted and all manner of farm chemicals were used for decades before I got there and I am sure this had a effect on all the life that would/could occupy that area. I would also say that if an area is completely devoid of ants or spiders or beetles/grubs or mice or rats or whateva that would naturally occur and if it is devoid of those creatures because of something happening, usually humans can be connected to the absence. AND I am not saying that Eisenia foetida are pure good creature that do no harm, imho they are just another example of an invasive species just trying to live and prosper like good ole Darwin sez. Just my two cents plus a nickle. IALBTC Here is a link that might be useful: A Note on Invasive Worm Species...See MoreWhat's the secret to growing SECRET?
Comments (21)My original Secret was likely a J&P plant. Secret's Out was a canned plant from Ventura Nursery in Tarzana, CA and didn't have a source tag on it. Neither ever expressed any viral symptoms. I gave the Secret's Out away last March when I moved and the old Secret went away in 2007 when I dismantled the Newhall garden. But, the only way to know for sure is to obtain VI material. You can do that by either obtaining whatever it is from Heirloom, as they supposedly have everything they offer indexed, or buying cuttings or bud wood from UC Davis Foundation Plant Services and propagating it yourself. Per their latest list, they offer both varieties. I understand the desire not to have RMV in your garden, but the chances of spreading it from one plant to the next by any other method of transmission than propagation are so improbable, not growing something for fear of its being "contagious" is rather extreme. With as wide-spread as RMV infection had been at one time, your other roses were very likely already infected long before you ever touched them. Being a newer rose actually doesn't really improve your chances of its being clean. IF the source has made the efforts to maintain clean stock, you may luck out. All it takes, though, is for a schlock producer to get hold of it and bud it on dirty stock and you have a new rose with RMV. I'd be highly suspect of anything bought from a big box store or from "garden centers" who charge bargain prices. Those types of outlets shop for the cheapest merchandise possible. When it comes to roses, that frequently means, and has meant for decades, infected stock. I've grown many hundreds of obviously infected plants. Those which demonstrated symptoms continued demonstrating them. Those which didn't, very seldom suddenly did. None which did begin demonstrating symptoms were indexed, so they stood the same chances of being infected as any of the others. MANY grew cheek to jowl with symptomatic plants and never expressed any symptoms. Do what allows you to feel secure, but denying yourself something out of fear of RMV is a bit "overkill"....See MoreWhat's the secret to growing beautiful zinnias?
Comments (17)Mommyandme, I understand that one well. Last year we had flooding rains and I lost 55 zinnia seedlings and 35 dahlia seedlings all to slugs. Nothing I could do about it either cause they where either in a yard turned swimming pool or a mud pit that looked and felt more like quick sand. Our weather has been really bizzare all spring and summer. Either really cold in June, the heat went on a couple of times until mid June with the thermostat set at 62 or it was drop dead heat and humidity. For the last month it's been a couple of days of horrible heat and humidity or it gets really cool again. Rain fall has been at a premium until today. Not even a thunderstorm all summer. So I need to go out and cut what I do have and maybe that will make them fill out and look better. Will do that one tomorrow. Not sure what kinds they are as the seeds where from trades and they aren't blooming what they where labeled. I did have one zinnia pinwheel that bloomed a very small flower and was only about 2 inches tall. then it got a trip across the lawn in the mouth of a chipmunk. The rest look like these plants or they haven't bloomed yet. some where supposed to be 3 feet tall, others short. Fran...See MoreSecret Santa came in March! Got pretty red succulents!
