Rosacea

I'd love to get some help and input from others who have this condition. What works for you? What should I avoid?

Oy vey.

I have it, and gawd knows, I've tried everything from Metrogel to diaper rash ointment (for the zinc oxcide).

The only thing that seems to help me is to stay out of extreme heat/sun and the cold. Nothing edible seems to set mine off, but the weather will. I use a SPF 45 sunscreen on my face every single day, and that actually seems to calm things down.

I have noticed that certain times of the month will flare things up a bit, too.

it runs in my husband's family, and alchohol is definately a contributor- beer especially, some of them have issues with red wine, some don't.

DH hasn't had a drink in 15 years, which I think helps.

weather is the biggest factor for him as well- a day out in the sun or strong wind will leave him blotchy for two weeks.

getting him to quite using things like rubbing alcohol and ivory soap on his face was more than half the battle, though- it's now an occasional patch or two, instead of an enduring redness,

cucumber and aloe both help to calm flareups for him- and he's man enough to be ok with the idea that 20 minutes with vegatables on your face beats the heck out of a week or more with vibrant red blotches on his face.

I'm pretty sure that in his case, there's a link between that and his dandruff, since he's definatley more sensitive to the sun and such when he's flakey.

I've found that a handful of fresh thyme, crushed, and shook up in a 12 ounce 'sports bottle' of water makes a really effective scalp rinse and toner for him, and it's gentler than even the mildest dilution of the essential oil.

never heard of them, actually, and I've been having to deal with it since i met my husband- it seems to run in his family (all three kids, dad, aunt, great aunt have it) his seems to like: being kept out of the light, the cold, the wind cucumber slices nicole miller's moustiruzing mask (am thinking about trying to copy it- it's got so much strawberry pulp in it it has seeds) Yves Rocher bio-camille line. thankfully, he's not a tanner, or a drinker.

I don't know, Nicole; I never questioned it, had never been told it was life-long, either. I'm 62 now with no redness, but I still get a huge pimple or two or three in clusters that put me in panic mode every couple months. My doctor warned me that menopause might cause a recurrence, but fortunately it didn't - but I didn't have hot flashes, either, or need any hormone replacement therapy. I was 55 when menopause began, 57 when done. As I said in my first post, I was unable to use anything to hide or control it. I had a hideous pizza face (and neck) that I was terribly conscious of for eight years. I had an official diagnosis from a dermatologist because my doctor (who is still my dr and aware of my history) sent me to the derm because I was pregnant, hoping the derm's expertise might be useful. He had nothing in his arsenal for a pregnant woman with rosacea at the time, but that was way back in the early 80s. My 34 yo son and 41 yo dtr had major bouts of acne in their teens and twenties. The same dermatologist who couldn't help my rosacea helped their acne tremendously. My dtr remains clear skinned at 41, but my poor son still has bouts of acne now and then, and pock marks, but he does not have rosacea according to his derm. He is treated for adult acne. Sherry

I will tell you a true story. This happened to my husband, not a friend of a friend's cousin's sister's next door neighbor. :-) My husband (a fair skinned man of British decent) had a bad case of Rosacea about 30 years ago. So bad I wouldn't let him wear red because it just made his face and head (he's bald) look so much worse. He saw a dermatologist for years. And tried all the typical treatments; internal (antibiotics) and topical treatments (Metrogel, antibiotics, cortisone, etc.). He used sunscreens, stayed out of the sun (he's a tennis player/coach so that was a tough one), stopped eating spicy foods, drinking alcohol, etc. , etc. Nothing helped. Not even a little. In 1994 we took a trip to Hawaii. We were strolling through a small open air market filled with food, health and art vendors. This one gal was selling bottles of Kukui Nut oil. We strolled by, ignoring the products since anything with oils seemed like a bad idea. As we pass the booth, we hear a woman say "I can help you with your Rosacea." She said it so softly we barely heard her, so she repeated the claim. We back peddled and stopped to see if she was using target marketing on my husband. I felt badly for hubby being called out in publicly like that but hey, if this woman's claim was true, I wanted to hear more. She again said that her product (pure kukui nut oil) would indeed help my husband. It was $8 for a small bottle which wasn't that big of a deal even back in '94 so we bought a bottle and continued on with our vacation. After vacation, hubby started using the oil every day for a month or so and before you knew it, his Rosacea was gone ... all gone ... nothing left. He eats normally, drinks socially, and still coaches tennis. And, he now has an assortment of red shirts in his closet. Can't promise anyone else this will work for you but hey, it's worth a try. A new review of the field of viruses in the genus Prunus has just appeared. It should give the reader a feeling for the complexity of the problems facing those who study viruses in roses. Prunus is a genus in the rosaceae family. New biotechnological control tools include the transfer of resistance by grafting, the use of new sources of resistance and the development of gene silencing strategies using genetic transformation. In addition, the application of next generation sequencing and genome editing techniques will contribute to improving our knowledge of virus–host interactions and the mechanisms of resistance. all of us with rosacea have different triggers. for me it is wine, heat and extreme cold. I can still drink alcohol in a cicktail without brbeaking out but had to give up all wine. For some it is spicy food. It's important that you learn the triggers and avoid them because Rosacea can't be cured, only managed.

Do you use metrogel or metrocream nighty? Wash only with a very mild soap? many people like cetaphil but it doesn't remove my makeup fully so I use B.Kamins gentle vegetable cleanser.

And find a non irritating sunblock and use it EVERY DAY.
Good luck with the management of a very very irritating chronic problem.

Wine used to be my main trigger. When I first found out I had Rosacea and not the skin cancer (that came later) that I was being treated for, every time I had a glass of wine I had a breakout. And it didn't matter if I had red or white wine. But I was still able to cook with wine and had no problems. After 12 years of dealing with this, I can now have the occasional glass of wine without a breakout. I use Metrogel at night and if I notice new redness I also use it in the morning. I wash my face with either goats milk soap or the Clarifying Soap that I get from an aromatherapy company. Both are good for my skin and help with keeping the rosacea under control. I always use sunscreen on my face all year, everyday. And I try to avoid the sun during the mid-day hours. "Unless I am working in the garden!> I just started using the Bare Minerals makeup and I really love the way my skin looks now. Good luck and hang in there, this is a condition you can find ways to control. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error but it can be done.

I went to the dermatologist and got a cream which I apply twice a day. Works wonders.
