I need help dressing up my breakfast bar. (photos)
Comments (27)Charliedawg! Alright, some fun stuff! I agree with your first thoughts that it needs a little something. I think corbels would be a good addition. I also really like pendent lights, they won't block your view. Our's don't. I agree that raised panel in that spot is likely a waste. I also agree that the kitchen won't really come to "life" until you add all your personal stuff. Here's a shot of our kitchen which includes corbels and pendents. Just like our properties, our kitchens are similar. Glad things are back on track. You can't stop writing after you move in. We want to hear all about life in the house. Comments (13)As long as you are sure you will have the quality of lighting that is right for your purposes, do what you like the looks of and don't worry about what others think. Having enough light for your needs is all that counts. In my L shaped kitchen, I formerly had only two ceiling fixtures and although I "thought" it was reasonable lighting, my kitchen designer encouraged me to consider the recessed ceiling pots. We now have 8 recessed pots to replace those two previous fixtures in our not yet complete renovation. I am thrilled to pieces that I listened to my KD. The quality of light I have now is sooo much better. Previously, when I stood in front of the counter there was obvious shadowing falling on the counter in front of me, now if I stand in front of the counter, there is an even light and if I really look for it I can still see a faint shadowing but basically the counter is shadow free. We have Ice Par halogen bulbs in them to give a diffuse even light. I didn't realize before that my lighting was substandard since it was all I'd had for 27 years. I will also be getting under cab lighting to brighten the space under the cabinets and one pendant to go over our little eating/workspace peninsula beside the stove. The pendant is not to use with the other lights but to use instead for someone having a late night snack or such. I have a family member who did a kitchen reno and replaced her original fixtures with improved ones rather than going with recessed pots and she is satisfied with what she has. I probably would have been satisfied if I had done the same but I am happy that I took the chance on the change since I can see that it has made an improvement for me and I haven't even got to the point of moving in to my new space yet! I can't see that simply replacing my orginal fixtures would have chased away the shadows the way that this lighting arrangement has....See MoreHELP! I need to do something with my front yard.
Comments (5)I would start with hardscaping to create a little mystery and anticipation in that flat plain. For example, you don't need to know much about masonry to lay out and construct a curvaceous and intriguing path of dry-laid brick or flagstone with perhaps an arbor to mark an entrance, a berm or speciman boulders to add some contour. Once you have the backbone in, other ideas begin to suggest themselves - such as a serpentine border of low groundcover along the path, a vine climbing up the arbor, plants with complementary foliage paired with the rocks, and shrubs or grasses to coyly disguise your path's progress (where does it go next? let's follow it and see!)...See MoreMy world has opened up! Comments (3)Gosh, there are so many granite choices. I found a few that appeal to me and I think might work with your flooring choice and white cabinets. I personally don't like white cabinets with a creamy coloured counter - I think one makes the other look a bit off. I'm not saying you need a bright white counter, but I feel like there should be some white in it, and maybe some of the grey/browns from your flooring. Some of these pictures are granite, a couple are quartzite. Here are a few: But, here is something else to consider. Have you looked at soapstone? I love it and you really should look at it, and feel it in person to appreciate it. There are several different colours available. See this chart of colour options and the way the colour changes when you add mineral oil to it. Gorgeous. Like every other surface they all have pros and cons. Do some reading on this forum from others about quartzite and also soapstone, the care needed and the types of imperfections you can expect and how to deal with them....See Moretisa
