Lifted Eyelids Anyone?

Just had the ophthalmologist (eye physician) tell me I have drooping eyelids and it is putting a strain on my eyes. He has recommended a plastic surgeon who specializes in this type of surgery. Has anyone had it?

Is it painful? Do they give a local anesthetic or put you to sleep? I have a consultation with him in two weeks, so will be asking him these questions; but I would like to hear your experiences, if any. Thank you. Annieil

My husband had it done about three years ago for the same reason and had no problems at all.

I know two people that have had this done. Once had severe drooping and she did have some complications for some time but after a year she was fine.

The other had no problems at all.

Basically, it is an eye lift. Make sure you get a good surgeon with lots of experience doing this. I have no doubt you'll be pleased with the results.

Dry eyes make mine have the same feeling. Of course the allergies make the eyes itch as well and anti-histimines for the allergies make the dry eyes worse. I use eye drops for my allergies but I also use Systane for the dry eyes and when I put them in, I gently coat along the lash line and it feels so soothing. I have heard that using baby shampoo on the eyelids helps but I have been afraid to try that. Try the Systane, it has something in it that regular eye drops don't, feels really good to put them in my eyes.

Glenda..I had to have mine done 4 years ago-as I could see my eyelids in my vision line. A plastic surgeon did it and it was covered by insurance as it was necessary. It only took her 20 min. to do both lids. I was really black & blue for a week but kept a bag of frozen peas on each of them every 30 min.! Surgeon was surprised I was less bruised than most after the week. A year later-I still was 'drooping' and she again did the surgery-only this time she lifted the lids by cutting skin out from just under the brow line. Been great ever since. Seems so good not to see my eyelids!

No. But about 30 years ago I had to see a PS for mole removal, so since I was there I asked him what if anything could be done when the time came, based on my features. He told me really nothing, except a forehead lift, but he did tell me to consider a certain singer who had had it done - and who looked awful! I do realize that things have changed over the past 30 years, but based on my features, not so much. I do have deep-set hooded eyes but so far have not been told that they are interfering with my vision. If they were, I am doubtful our insurance would cover the cost. There are people who have the right features who do look better post a procedure, but I am not one of them. There is Botox etc., but I am allergic to it. Colour wise I am the perfect candidate for all sorts of procedures, but I also have very thin skin and of course the thin facial features. Should I be someone who would/could have work done I would seriously want a PS who was excellent and conservative. I have known a few people who had a full face lift and then it fell - it did not look good. Also they were surprised going in thinking that a "face lift" was just that, the whole face. It is really divided into parts - and you have to pay for the various parts - at least in Canada. It is also not allowed as a medical deduction on income taxes, to the extent that we can claim a credit - nor are moles (skin tags) as they are called.

Maybe she got some fat injected into them? I have no idea. Luckily, I think I still had some "fat" right under my eyebrow, and my surgeon took off mostly my eyelid. And, I made a big deal about not taking too much. It's tricky for us with hooded eyes. She does look younger in the first pic, IMO, but different-which is what I said earlier-be aware, after eyelid surgery those of us with hooded eyes won't look like we did when we were younger WITH HOODED EYES, the hooded part will be gone. I still have squinty eyes though. eta: I had only my uppers done, no problem on my lowers.

I had it done 12 years ago. 4 lid blephoroplasty (eyelift ;)

They put you under. Before they wheeled me into the OR, they gave me some kind of relaxant drug through an IV...jeez! Now I know why people become drug addicts...I felt so good ;)

Back on topic...I had very little post op pain. Still woozy from the anestesia when I got home, and just rested. I believe I was given prescription painkillers but don't think I really needed them. I will say that I looked terrible, like I'd been punched in both eyes. That lasted about a week. You aren't supposed to bend over or lift anything heavy for a short time.

My husband's grandmother, who is in her 80's, just had her uppers done a few months ago, same issue as you. She went through it/came out of it just fine.

Also, if you smoke, quit at least 10 days before. You will heal faster and better.

Thank you so very much for all the pertinent information regarding the eyelid lift. I don't smoke--quit 34 years ago, thank goodness, but have enough infirmities that I worry about additional ones. At least I have some idea of what to anticipate and can prepare. Thanks again.AnnieIL

:) both my parents have had it done, they're in their 70's, my mom had crepe-y lids from decades of abuse (those old black eye liners have ruined many a delicate eye area!) and my dad lost 200 pounds after heart surgery, both were done for 'medical' reasons...

both of them came through fine, and my dad's a diabetic with some serious healing issues.

my only advice is to find the doctor you trust the most overall- and walk out on anyone whose portfolio isn't current, or whom tries to pressure you into ANY other procedure.
