Home Hair Color...What Brand?

I'm going to try saving some money and go back to home hair coloring. I have to cover gray, so I guess I need to use a permanent color. What brand do you like best both for ease of use and best results?

Well, I don't have grey hair (at least I don't think I do, since I've been coloring for so long). But I really like the Feria products because they stayed color-true the longest. I usually use a red color, and most reds wash out quickly, but not so much with Feria. I also like the Feria with a highlighter in it, although I'm not great at the application technique yet. My hair is very curly though, so the fact that my highlights aren't perfect is had to notice. The only other one I tried was Herbal Essence, and it didn't stay red very long at all. Oh, BTW, the salon jobs I had done (2 of them) also rinsed out very quickly. That was a giant waste of money.

The Dyson DC41 "Animal" is the best vaccuum I've ever owned for animal hair. We built a new house 3 yrs ago and I had a central vac system installed with "hide a hose" because I was told that the central vac had much more suction. We have 2 hairy beasts - a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Maine Coon cat. The central vac and the hide a hose was such a pain to drag out and use that I went out and bought the Dyson, intending just to use it on my hardwood floors. Since I've had it - about 2 yrs now - I have never used the central vac! It pulls more hair out of my carpeting and furniture than you can imagine. It also is superb for pulling dirt and grit out of the hardwood floors, where the boards are joined. The only downside is how much you have to empty the collection bins because they pick up so much stuff that other vaccums miss. I love the Dysons so much that I just bought their smallest cannister just to clean my stairs and smaller jobs. If I were building another house, I would not waste money on a central vac system again - I'd just buy a Dyson for each floor. LOVE them and I've owned just about every brand of vaccuum cleaner on the market at some time or another.

I've been coloring my hair since my late twenties when I started to go gray all at once. I also attributed it to my oldest child! I go every three weeks; foils /lowlights every other time, root color in between, and a haircut every time. Occasionally there are small changes for the seasons--- a bit darker and longer in the autumn and winter, brighter and shorter in the spring and summer. I wear a chin length pageboy/bob, all one length, parted on the side, tucked behind my ears. This style looks good on others in a beautiful silvery gray, but like someone else mentioned, I can't go and live in a yurt for a year while my hair grows out from a massive short cut. It's expensive having this done every three weeks, but at least my hairdresser loves me :-( In addition to the chemical reaction/ hair problem, the OP has a problem with the hairdresser following her directions. If you keep telling them not to "texturize" your hair and they persist in doing it, you should switch salons. They are supposed to do what YOU want.

We have a black lab/beagle mix dog and two Siamese cats. This probably goes without saying but the easiest way to remove pet fur from laundry is to limit how much goes in to begin with. No, I'm not advocating pet beds and never cuddling your pets -- I'd never suggest a rule I could never adhere to :) However: 1. Grooming does make a difference. I'm not great about it, but even once every other week or so with our short-hair breeds keeps the fur at bay. 2. Regular vacuuming. Much of the fur that winds up on bedding and clothing comes from the floor and furniture, as its carried on your feet and body. 3. Remove excess fur before laundering. Brush or tape-roll bedding to pick up the top-most layers of fur. Same for clothing or pet bedding. If the first layers are gone, the smaller pieces stuck between textile fibers have a better chance of working their way out, into the water, and down the drain. 4. Diet/hydration. Okay, feline nutrition is sore subject with me and apologies in advance if any of this comes off as abrasive. Dried kibble is one of the worst things you can feed a cat. Some vets will go so far as to say that the cheapest canned food is better than the most expensive kibble. The reason for this is that cats do not naturally feel thirst and seek out water, because their instinct is to get moisture/hydration from fresh kills. House cats have been domesticated for only a fraction of time as dogs (hence their behavior) and have not evolved to seek water from bowls. The result is a chronically dehydrated kitty and, in addition to the obvious kidney problems, what does this cause? You guessed it, excess shedding! We feed an entirely raw diet (rabbit, mice, chicks, etc.) and have almost no shedding. That said, raw is a huge commitment and I understand not everyone will do it. I encourage anyone with cats to read the most excellent research done, entirely pro-bono, by Dr. Lisa Pierson after her struggles keeping her own cats healthy. I had my hair highlighted for about ten years, but I found that to be too expensive after it got up to around $200 or more each trip. I tried to do it myself a few years back and accidentally bleached it white (which I found hilarious). I was letting it grow out and the ladies in the salon would ask to be allowed to fix it and of course, they would lighten all of my hair back to the same point which drove me nuts so I took the plunge and lived with the line until I could cut it all off. I found out my natural hair color had turned almost a light brown after being darker blonde. I'm getting a little grey coming in now, but I'm hoping it will blend ok. I'm not coloring it myself.

I just used the Loreal Couleur Experte multi-tonal color system today. So far, I am pleased. Since it is a two step process, you have highlights, but they are very subtle, so it seems to look very natural. I got it at Walmart for $17. Not the cheapest, but it really is nice.

I use the Garnier Nutrisse. I found some very good reviews on it on the web, so I gave it a try. It's inexpensive (about $7. @ Walmart), has a nice scent and works well on my very straight and fine hair. I'm not dealing with gray yet.

I also like Nutrisse. Have tried all different brands and finally this one looks great. I use Blond 101. Really like the shine.

Garnier Nutrisse when I was still fighting reality...

but I've got such vibrantly silver hairs coming in that I started treating them as a design element, instead of a flaw...

at the moment, they're an interesting shade of periwinkle, the fade-out of cobalt blue and royal purple temporary dyes by Special FX. MY husband (the artist) does my hair once a month in three colors with a toothbrush, and he's always playing with the blues, adding greens one time, purples the next. they darken by ash-brown hair a bit, but not much...and I get none of the problems of doing accent colors over stripped hair (like everything turning green after the first wash because of the blonde underneath)

but not everyone's ready to be the 'blue haired old lady' of this generation. so I'd definately go with the Garnier.

Any brand will wash out if you are using crappy shampoo, try a sulfate free shampoo. I like L'Oreal preference color myself, but also use professional color being a stylist. The professional color is usually less damaging and stylists are trained on what color works best for what skin color. Also if you want to keep long hair only use permanent color on new root growth and find a demi that matches to do touch up on the rest of the hair to prevent more damage.

What I like to do (for all over color at least, I let the pros deal with the complicated stuff) is buy professional hair color online (for cheap) and activators as well.

Basically for all over color (and good grey coverage) you mix 2 oz of the color with 2 oz of the activator and so on.. so 4oz color = 4 oz activator. Use a bowl and brush (cheap at sallys or online)

I like Mastey personally because it is ammonia-free and safe to leave on stubborn grey hair for a little longer than 45 mins without heat.

Anyway, you should leave the color on 45 mins. Initially it may be more expensive than buying at home color, but the creme activator you get is pretty big and can be used more than once. The color on this site is 7.99 and the activator is 5.99 (you would use 20 vol).

It's a very cheap way to get professional color results. Make sure to use a good post color conditioner treatment to lock in the color.
