darker pigment showing up on my face

| I have always had clear, healthy skin, but in the last month since I have been out in the sun more for the summer I have developed patches on my forehead and cheek that are just a shade darker than the rest of my face. It isn't very noticeable unless you look close, but there is definite discoloration. It is not a mole or other growth, it is just a shade darker. One patch is a thin line across my forehead in a crease.
My sister suggested it is from hormones in my birth control pills, could this be right? And what can I do to get my skin the same tone again? I live in AZ and am outside quite a lot so staying out of the sun is not an option.

| I don't really know what is causing this, but you might want to make a trip to the dermatologist. Of course, you should use sunscreen every day, anywhere exposed including ears. |

| Your sister is right. Both BC pills and pregnancy can cause this. It has actually been known as "the mask of pregnancy". You might want to talk to your DR. about trying a different BC pill. |

| Wildchild, I just changed my BC pills, I will go back on the Ortho! Thanks! Ivy MI, the product you recommended says "Good solution to relieve minor muscle and rheumatic pain, neural pain, sciatica, vertebral, joint pain, stiffness and muscle spasm." How would this be good for dark pigment on my face? |

| Personally, I'd bypass the hot compress idea! I struggle with this, too. It's called "melasma" and BC pills and pregnancy can cause it, as another poster said. It is made worse by the sun. Most people who have it struggle with it - it's almost impossible to eliminate. I've tried Obagi, intense pulse light therapy, microdermabrasion, peels, etc., without any luck. I don't want to spend the big bucks for lasering. Maybe if I win the lottery some day. The best thing you can do is wear sunscreen! Good luck! |

| I noticed some areas of darker pigmentation near my eyes, when I was about 40. I've always been a sun worshipper, and I was on birth control pills for about 20 years. I stopped the pills and stopped going in the sun. If I go outside in the syummer, I now wear a hat with a big brim. And the brown patches have disappeared! |

| I noticed a couple of darker spots after I spent a week in FL. I did wear sunblock, but possibly not enough. Since then I've been faithful with the sunblock and they've faded. |
