I am in a slump--I really don't like most things I see in the stores. Those 3/4 sleeve painter frocky looking jackets. YUK! The dress & blouse prints look like double knit from the 60's & 70's. The sheer little tight things-yuk! Good gosh what happened to a nice flattering cut in a jacket. A lot of stuff at Penneys & same level stores looks like junk--then I go to Dillards & I can't afford a thing there anymore--not that I have seen much I would wear--some I would look totally foolish in. Aren't clothes way too expensive. I picked up a pair of slacks & they were $180 & I know that is low end in this type store. I want to look nice but I don't see the $$$ in the clothes. WHAT is a girl to do????

Maybe you could start looking in smaller stores you usually don't go in, see who has more classic styles and get a knowledgeable sales person to guide you; I find department stores hard to navigate and overwhelming at times, specially for clothes.

I agree with mitchdesj. Smaller stores are always better when you are not going for something in particular. Sales people are better persons to guide you because they would have already seen a number of combinations.

For those who are messing with this challenge, I empathize. This is harder than it at first seems. Once you get the color decisions made, you then have to find products to fulfill it. Ain't easy. Many times they are "close matches" at best, close but no cigar. The discussion on the other thread has run toward a discussion of the difference between using color when creating art and using color when decorating a living space. Color variations allow painters to create spacial dimension within the artwork whereas in color applications in interior decorating, the variations in a color that occur because of light's effects through spatial dimension and object orientation can thwart a color scheme. If that all sounds esoteric, I apologize. It's easier to understand intuitively than to explain. This makes me think about the House Beautiful series of features using paintings or photos to make a color scheme--they draw out a color from each of a number of prominent places in the image. I can't seem to find an example of one of these features in the online site, but subscribers will know what I'm talking about. I bet the editors have to mess around a lot before they choose the actual color scheme, arguing about whether a matched-up color sample is a hair too green or too dark or whatever to play nicely in a multiple color palette. Another issue is whether to copy the artwork's proportional emphasis on each color or merely readjust the proportions. In my case, I'm trying to decide about floor color--the best-color-match product I'd actually enjoy having on a real floor is not a dominant color in the art piece. And unless I decide to use painted cabs I have to work in real wood colors also and that creates another emphasis conundrum also.

"I'm interested that you don't like Jack & Jill bathrooms - why? I guess lots of people don't, because one rarely sees them. Though when I think of a Jack & Jill bathroom, I think of one that has really 3 compartments - 2 outer rooms each with toilet and sink, and a shared inner room with tub/shower. It makes sense to me, because I can share a tub or shower but want my own space for the stuff I store in the bathroom (separate from my husband, we drive each other crazy with this), and because I want 2 toilets. However, at least one would have to be accessible from a hall, not just from the bedroom." This is exact set-up we have in our current home, but as the only bathroom(s) in the house. The only addition is that the W/D are also in the center room with the tub, and each "half bath" also contains a linen closet. On the plans, it's called a "compartment bath", so maybe that's as a distinction from the traditional "jack and jill" that is a single bath open to two rooms. Ours is an MCM home, and the two doors into the compartment bath are from two short halls that each serve two bedrooms. It works just as you think it would. The only downside functionally is that there are a LOT of doors in a small area. It's an ideal set-up for just the two of us. But it will give us fits when it comes time for resale. A traditional buyer won't get it. Heck, they probably won't get the MCM house, either. So we'll be looking for just the right buyer (as were the POs when they sold the house to us).

LOOOVE what you've done. That's going to be stunning. I have a small pass through that I created where there was a door and went through this same argument with myself. In the end, I stayed with the flat counter and now that the top has been installed I can tell I'm going to love the extra deep space. My situation is quite different though. It's where I plan to do baking things, and while mine is next to the dining room it doesn't overlook it. It will also serve as a landing zone for things going in/out to the back patio. I'm assuming the DR will have a casual feel and get daily use. Are there views into here from other rooms of the house? I was going to say "flat counter" since it appears you want the two rooms to really function as one. But given that the sink is there I think I would go for the raised counter. You don't want to be splashing into the DR. Tough call.

Bookcases: match room or match furniture?

Thanks for the input! I think I'm afraid to commit to permanent placement of things which is why I'm looking at individual bookcases instead of builtins. :) Paint has certainly been considered--especially when I was thinking I could make IKEA work--but aside from yellow walls and a white ceiling, there's no paint to match. I'd rather stick to a wood finish so that in the future I can shuffle the bookcases around...split up the set and stick them in the kids' bedrooms, whatever. I do like those green bookcases though! But I'm looking for something simpler and midcentury-inspired and I'm not sure that would work as well with paint as a traditionally detailed bookcase. I don't think the cherry would darken the room much (maybe all the junk/books inside would, though). I'm looking at unstained cherry which darkens into a medium light orange tone. This is in a low ranch house with 8 ft ceilings and I don't think bookcases can be tall enough to be oppressive in there. But it sounds like dark wood is out!

Yes definitely, it has to be a "good hair" day , lol..............

I recently had a half day set aside to go to a certain mall and look for clothes,
I ended being tired after one hour of walking around, couldn't figure it out.
I forced myself to stay another hour, accomplished nothing.

Other days, I'll stop by and find things I love in no time and it' s painless.

These last few years, I've been shopping ahead of the season, so as soon as new things arrive for the next season, I get what I need in the brands I like.
The size selection is better. We have a medium department store here that is not part of a chain, and I seem to find a lot there so I'm lucky in that respect.

I agree. The little shrunken jackets and polyester tops in wild prints that look like they should be in the maternity section--not so good for me. Also, please give me a pair of pants with the waist AT my waist. Why on earth do women want their pant waist bands below the waist?

I shop Penneys for basics (slacks, lingere) and smaller shops like Chicos which isn't inexpensive. I get other basics from LL Bean & Land's End. I cannot even find anything I like in Nordstroms.

What has happened to sleeves?? Real sleeves, not the "save some fabric" cap sleeves. When I weed out my older tops, I see where the measurement from the underarm seam to the hem of the sleeve is 4" on average. The new sleeves are 1" on average unless you go to plus sizes.
