I recently purchased a GHD flat iron which does a great job of making curls, flips, ringlets etc but the curls don't seem to hold. After watching some You tube videos, I see they spray a curl setting product on the hair prior to applying heat. I've tried this using Tres-seeme as well as GHD products, but it makes my hair a little sticky so the flat iron plates don't glide well and this results in inability to curl. Any suggestions for making curls that last? Should I just spray the curl setting mist on AFTER the curl is made? TIA

Try Redken Hot Sets. It works great and is not as sticky as Tres-semme.

My curls never really hold with a curling or flat iron. I thought it was just me. They kind of strighten my hair if anything. I think the nature of the "iron" is to straighten the hair and the weight of your hair is going to pull down any curls. I still find hot rollers to be better to curl hair. I generally only use an iron to straighten, shape my bangs, or de-frize my hair.
