BTW, went back after my post to see if anything had changed. It had. Now they roll it into shipping, so that a $45 plant has $35 shipping with no explanation as why shipping is $35, when you read their notes on shipping it should be $15. My guess is someone turned them in for the bait and switch, so they moved the extra charge to shipping. Oh, and to be clear, there was no real explanation for the extra $20 charge before it was changed to shipping. Just something like "this plant has a $20 additional charge". Arktrees

From the ones I've used Westernevergreen.com is by far the best. You'll NEVER get a conifer that is root bound because of the type of soil they use. The roots are big & healthy, no root separation required. You can take the tree from the pot to the ground. Plus they are the cheapest... being the best and the cheapest usually doesn't go hand in hand. The only downside is their website isn't user friendly. I enjoy seeing multiple large pictures of trees before I buy. So you almost have to look on WesternEvergreens site to get the names they have available and plug each name into google to see what it looks like. The second best would be ConiferKingdom.com. There plants are very large and healthy. They also have great sales... I've bought 3' tall conifers for just $15 before. They do offer great sale items throughout the year plus usually always offer a free plant with purchases over $100. Plus there website is great... each conifer has multiple pictures + the size information. Some of the root systems are more tangled and aren't as free as Westernevergreens. So you will need to spend a good 10+ minutes to untangle some of the roots, but I haven't received anything from them that were root bound. Those are the only two companies I now use... I don't even look elsewhere.

The only mail order source specifically offering such grafts is Camellia Forest. Porterhowse had some a few years ago, but not anymore and he acted like it was unlikely more are forthcoming. There are a couple wholesalers in the Southeast that are starting to focus on this. (and I think this is where David Parks gets his plants) I saw the catalog of one up at Rarefind recently, but I forget the name of it. Ron said "those guys came up to do a sales pitch" so I think we'll be seeing more of this in the next several years. Different category of plant but there are also a couple rhododendron wholesalers in the northeast who are going to start to produce grafted plants. I have mixed feeling about it. Though it will make certain cultivars somewhat easier to grow I don't want to see nurseries use it as an excuse to try to turn rhododendrons into a carefree gas station plant. Which other than the ironclads, they are not and deserve better than that.
