Tipping home-based hair stylists

I need some advice---is a tip expected of a person who runs a hair salon out of their home? If so, what %?

I recently quit going to a hair salon because the price went up 10% and by the time I tipped the hair stylist his 20%, I was spending well over $100 for a color and a haircut. I am on a serious budget now, so I am going to try to do my own color and get a $35 haircut.

I used to go to a home based salon and the hairdresser (owner) had a sign up saying tipping wasn't allowed. I totally agree with this since she gets all the profits.

Just last week I paid $105 for color and a haircut! I notice that hair salons don't break down the various services by price anymore - they just give you the total. My hair color was just an all over color that I could have achieved at home. It came out so dark that I bought a Loreal Highlighting kit the next day. It comes with the all over color and the highlights. I bought Toasted Coconut (the kits are on sale for $12.99 at RiteAid this week only). I used the highlight part and put some highlights in my hair and I am very pleased with it. When my roots show I will use the all over color part of the kit and touch up the roots and maybe blend some into the end. It is virtually foolproof but if you want some highlights in the back it would be easier to ask a friend or daughter - or a last resort husband - to do the back since that can be tricky. I've used this kit before and it is just as good as anything I've gotten at a salon. I've actually gotten compliments on my hair, something I didn't get when I was paying $100-$200! Also, I no longer automatically add 20% to my bill because of the outrageous prices they are charging. $10 is my limit, no matter what. Call me cheap, but I'm not a fool.

I'll have to look into that one, Kathya. I just bought this Revlon highlighting kit at Drugstore.com, and I will use it myself and just get a haircut from this woman at her house. I'll also look at the L'oreal one to experiment.

What I've learned about hair stylists. 1) Find someone who has a style you like, ask them where they get their hair cut and the name of the stylist. It's a great way to find good stylists in salons you may not have considered before. 2) Any decent hairdresser who is truly good at their "craft" will not be easy to get an appointment with and that's for good reason. Beware of someone who can take you the same day (unless they have a sudden cancellation) They will also either own the salon or, (not always, but most times) make mucho bucks. Be prepared to shell out good money. 3) LOOK at the way your hair stylist does THEIR hair. Don't go to someone with purple spiked hair and zebra striped boots to get a "Lady Di" classic look. If you have the time, go to the salon and watch them cut and style someone else's hair. Do you like what you see? 4) A good hair cut will not require a lot of product and tools to look good. A good hair stylist that knows their craft will not HAVE to rely on product to make the hair style right or product sales to boost their income. If you don't like goop stay clear of trendy shops like Toni and Guy, cause they LOVE to sell you goop. 5) Bring photos of hair styles you like, more preferably, photos of yourself with a cut you liked or a style that worked for you in the past. A picture speaks a thousand words. Hair dressers see a lot of heads and it's not easy remembering everyone's preferences. Help your hair stylist help you. Have notes about things you disliked in the past, such as: No Texturizing, I Like My Bangs Long, etc. Never go without your notes and photo or you may end up with a different cut each time you leave. 6) When you get a stylist who LISTENS to you, LOOKS at your photos, RUNS their fingers through your hair assessing how your hair behaves, TREATS you well and gives you a GOOD cut, by all means TIP them well! She did your hair as a stylist and tipping isnt generally decided by who owns the business but by percentage or appreciation. Ive never understood that whole take on not tipping the owner. i jist always tip whoever provided the service. as far as it being from her home. I can see thr point that her overhead is cheaper but does that mean that in a retail space if the landlord gave her a break on the rent that the customers should also see that break in their cost? if the work is good and thats what you are paying for it doesnt seem fair to me to not tip for any reason except not being satisfied and if the work she does is good and how you like it who is anyone to say what she can charge? she can charge what she feels like her work is worth and what her clients think its worth . 🤷‍♀️. just my thoughts. i can totally see both sides of the coin

How I would deal with a cleaning service would be very different than how I deal with a cleaning woman I hired. A service is a business; I don't tip the saleslady at Macy's who helps me - Macy's pays her and her salary is between them. With my own cleaning woman, I pay her what she asked for. After a year, when I go away for a month (she comes every two weeks), I will give her a day's pay during that time as "paid vacation". I know she counts on her money but I don't want her in the house when I'm out of town - she's just too flakey. I always give each $100 at Christmas. Every 2-3 years, I give my yard man and my cleaning woman a raise. My yard man has been with me for nearly 12 years. I'm afraid he's getting to the top amount I can afford to pay him - at some point, all jobs reach that point. If I had a new cleaning service or cleaning woman in my house, I would definitely stay home the first 2-3 times they come. They may have questions or you may see them doing something you do NOT want them to do (rearrange your book shelves?) so being there is a good plan. I still have to stay around with my "new" cleaning woman (started last Aug) as while I have told her WHAT to do, if never occurs to me to tell her what NOT to do as things she does astound me. A few months ago, I was out when she cleaned my library and when I returned, the smell of PineSol was overwhelming when I sat in my upholstered club chair - it was so powerful, it caused me an asthma attack. I couldn't imagine what on earth she even need to use PineSol for in the library - had some been accidentally spilled? I called her and she told me she had "wiped down" my upholstered chair with a cloth with pure, undiluted PineSol on it so the chair would not "smell". My chair did NOT smell - I'm not a smoker and I don't pee on my chair! In 50 years of cleaning women, this was a first. Who knew I had to tell her not to do this? Thank God she didn't do it to the cotton/linen velvet LR sofa! At least my chair was cotton and a quick wipe down with clear water and a good room airing solved the problem. Yes, this IS the same woman who still cannot put the sheets on the bed correctly so we do it together. Believe me, if I could find someone else, I would. But since it is not impossible for me to do any cleaning, I'm stuck with her. I just have to try to anticipate her flights of fancy.

Well ... I've just had another damn haircut! Went back to the guy who cut it last week when I was attempting the messy bob, but found it took too long to get it right before work in the mornings so I was just blowing it out straight, and it was a bit too long to lay right. I'm now shorter on the sides and in back, and very pleased with how simple it is to style this baby into a swinging little bob. I'm done with the changes for now. Only took a month of multiple stylists and entirely too much money to arrive at a style I'm loving. (Eeek. Entirely too much obsession over hair here!)

That's what I'm going to do too, ramrice - have my hair cut by a professional but do the color myself. I highly recommend the Loreal Experte Colour Highlighting kit. It normally sells for around $18.99-$21.99 but I can usually find it on sale somewhere. I actually stocked up this week with 2 kits in 2 different colors to see which one I like best! For a haircut a few months ago, I did try Fantastic Sams for $12.95 but they added $3 on to cut layers into it! Can you believe it? The one thing I did get for my $105 was an excellent haircut so I'd go back to her for that. If I could cut my hair myself I'd do it. Getting my hair "done" was something I used to treat myself to because I love having someone do my hair, but it has gotten too ridiculous in $$.

I go out to the local beauty school to have my hair colored. THey do a great job and I have bra strap length curly hair - runs me less than $40, tip included.

Susancnw - I'd forgotten all about beauty schools! That is an excellent idea. I used to see them around my area years ago, but now that I think about it, I can't recall any in my area anymore. I'll have to look them up on the web. Even if I did my base color and have the beauty school do the highlights I could save some $$. Thanks for reminding me!
