New bonsai owner, Dwarf Jade tips? Pics included.
Comments (26)First, it's a fallacy that succulents like to go dry before you water them. Succulents PREFER an evenly moist soil. The problem is they react poorly to saturated soil, so if your soil supports any significant amount of perched water, you have a problem. Succulents gone dry suffer drought stress just like other plants. Fortunately, they generally tolerate that stress a little better than other commonly grown houseplants, and are able to recover. That built in ability to TOLERATE, shouldn't be taken as a preference. Plants tolerate a lot they don't like. If you have foliage at the ends of branches, you need to determine what's causing it. The big 3 are low light, low N supply, and root congestion. If roots are congested, it won't matter how much light or N you supply, the growth will tend to concentrate near apices and your plant will have that 'poodle' look; so be thinking 'repot' if the plant needs it, and around Father's day is a good time to do it. You can use the Miracle-Gro. It's a fine fertilizer for containerized plants. For bonsai though, fertilizers that get their N from nitrate sources are better because they tend to keep growth compact by reducing internode length and keeping leaves smaller. If you DO use the MG, you'll need to be sure your plants are getting an adequate supply of Ca & Mg, because they are lacking in the MG. If you're making your own soil and didn't use lime (dolomite), you'll need to address this issue. I won't get to deeply into it until I find out what you're using for soil. Avoid watering in sips. The practice ensures that soluble salts will build up in the soil, causing a drought reaction that could cause shedding of foliage and branches, or poor looking foliage and poor growth. Use a soil that allows you to flush the soil when you water. For bonsai, nothing else is appropriate and will lead to problems. You can review pictures upthread. Soils like Josh, Parabellum, and I use will all please you and your plant. A picture would be nice ..... Al...See MoreTips for Miele oven owners from our Miele service guy
Comments (22)When I bought my oven Masterchef was included. There was no option. I've used it twice in 8 years and could easily do without it. However, I've read posts from people who were buying the oven for Masterchef. It works well if you don't know how to cook, or aren't sure or don't want to bother. If the oven doesn't have it then attention really must be paid to learning the way the various combination heat settings work and which to use for what since this is European convection. Example: one of my favorite settings -- autoroast -- is a cold-oven setting. By that I mean no preheat is required. The food is started in a cold oven then both the broiler and oven element are engaged to sear and bring the oven up to temperature. Autoroast isn't suitable for a souffle. But it's great for roasting poultry, meat or veggies -- and terrific for Thanksgiving turkey which is heavy and cumbersome to put into a preheated oven. Learning the oven is well worth it IMO but the alternative to figuring it out is Masterchef settings. Depends on your needs....See MoreLG Washer Owners useful cleaning tips
Comments (17)An additional point to mention: Thanks to everyone's advice on this forum, we learned many great tips that manuals either don't mention or they gloss over. Several posters have mentioned to empty the remaining water from the detergent dispenser in order to reduce the chance of mildew. Along with wiping down the gasket, leaving the door open, etc., we dutifully emptied the detergent dispenser (usually about a teaspoon or so of water left in there.) Only recently did we accidentally find that we can remove not only the dispenser that holds detergent, but the entire drawer that includes the detergent, bleach, and softener dispensers. And when we empty the entire drawer, we easily get a quarter cup of water. That's way more water than what's left around the gasket or on the inside of the door. This may have been mentioned in previous posts and we just missed it, but maybe mentioning it again might help a few more folks. Of course, we may just be the last folks in the universe to find this out! :)...See MoreNew houseplant owner, tips?
Comments (31)Teyha- I kept my maidenhair alive just by checking it every day. I would stick my finger in the soil about an 1" down, and if it felt on the dry side I would water it. I guess I never really thought much about it at the time, because that's what I do with all my plants- make the rounds either in morning or evening. I don't remember misting it. The difference was, I had it in a ceramic pot (these have negatives for other plants) that drains a LOT slower than the clay pots you have. I think I'd switch to a pretty ceramic pot. I don't normally give this advice, except for this instance. The clay pots wick moisture away from the plants and that's not what you want. I think of clay pot for other types of plants such as hoya or jade, not ferns, because they can dry out quickly then whammo! There goes your fern. I kept the maidenhair on the kitchen island, which was away from direct light but we had giant windows, and it did so well there (plus I was reminded to check it)....See Moreponderinstuff
