Los Angeles weather doing a number on my skin!

I live in LA and recently had a baby. The 2 combined have sent my 40 year old skin into a weird zone. No matter how much I moisturize, it still looks dry. I am in search of great skincare that doesn't have to cost a fortune. I am currently using Serious Skin Care (HSN) C cleanser and a moisturizer from the dermatologist. Neither one are working wonders for me. I've tried Chanel eye cream and that seemed good but don't REALLY want to buy the whole expensive line if I can help it. Any suggestions?

I know when I moved from East coast to Northern California (San Francisco Bay area), I realized how dry the air was. The tips I have learned from this and other forums:

1. hydrate: water
2. essential fatty acids: your diet needs to be rich in olive oil, omega 3 (like flaxseed), but in general nuts and seeds contain also Vitamin E (don't get sidetracked by the "oh they have fat in them").
3. dermatoligists have recommended Neutrogena Norwegian Formula to keep in moisture. It has petrolatum. To keep the moisture in, nothing beats petrolatum.
4. may want to include alphalipoic acid either cremes/supplements.

My 40 year old skin freaked out after spending the holidays at my parents. I don't know if it was the water, the lack of humidity or what. It was so bad it itched, but didn't look that dry. I tried several different lotions and ointments but here's what finally worked. I used my normal body wash (Caress) with those exfoliating gloves, followed by Olay's new shower body lotion for sensitive skin (basically a conditioner for your skin that you rinse off.) Pat dry and then applied Gold Bond lotion to the extra itchy skin. All better in a couple of days. I second drinking extra water and getting extra Omega fats in the diet. I use Coromega - no fish burps!

Good luck, just starting your first real garden is fun and challenging (and often humbling). I respectfully disagree with the book reading recommendations, it's Spring and it's time to get dirty and make mistakes and post your specific problems online to get advice now. Then after you know more about your interests and your problems, then it's time to read about propagating plants and the Soil Food Web and integrated pest management and all the other in-depth or broad topics. A couple of questions ans suggestions: Is your plot in the coastal fog zone or more inland? Cukes and melons are challenging along the coast and will always get powdery mildew, in my experience. Does your plot have access to composted manures or green waste? Digging in fully-finished compost in your beds before planting will add tilth and nutrients to the garden bed. Will you germinate in place or in containers, which are then transplanted? If you won't be able to get to your plot frequently, it could be easier to start seeds at home. But growing seeds in containers and transplanting is a slightly different skill set than caring for seeds germinated in place. Root crops like radishes and beets seldom transplant well, so those should always be germinated where you want them. Attached is a link to a good LA seed planting calendar. Everything you've listed, except cukes, can be started now and grown through what I expect to be a cool, foggy spring. Crabgrass is a summer annual plant in all climates as far as I know. Can you post a picture of the grass you're calling crabgrass. It probably is crabgrass but there are some who refer to other weeds as crabgrass. One problem is that crabgrass thrives under the same conditions that bermuda thrives under - hot weather and mowed short. Then if you water more than once per week, you're guaranteed to get crabgrass. I used to live between Aviation and the 405 in Hawthorne. My lawn was miserable, but I didn't know what I know now about lawns. If I had it to do over again for that location I would put in either Kentucky bluegrass (fine blade) or St Augustine (coarse blade). Either of those should keep the crabgrass out of the lawn without any effort. Here's a friend's house in Huntington Beach... That is KBG. He mows and waters once per week. Fertilizes with used coffee grounds whenever he remembers - about once per year. It never goes dormant that close to the beach. The reason I mention alternatives to what you have is the fact that you have both crabgrass and kikuyu. Those are the most noxious weeds you can get and you have both. Furthermore you have common bermuda. There isn't anything I consider worth saving or even spending any money on. Bermuda is one of the hardest grasses to keep looking really nice. I know St Aug is really easy and I suspect KBG can be really easy in your area. So, are you really going to keep the bermuda? There's going to be a lot of dead bermuda if you really want to clean things up. The hard part about bermuda is keeping it dense enough to fight off weeds. That requires mowing twice weekly at a low setting, watering once weekly, and fertilizing once monthly. If you can't do that then you face a life of weeds and herbicides. Other grasses get mowed much higher (helps fight off weeds), watered weekly (all grasses need water once per week), and fertilized at most 3x per year.

I think this thread indicates why Washingtonis do so well potted in places like the midwest in the summer. Until they get rootbound or get too cold in the fall. Check out LA's temps some time 83-66, 79-62, 82-64. Sound familiar. It's just like a lot of Michigan days or other places in the midwest. They obviously thrive in that weather. I have one that is in a pot I'm guessing at least 100 gallons. About 30 inces high 24 inches wide at the bottom, and 30 inches wide at the top. It has pushed up about 5 fronds since late April (once it went outside). it has really shot uo in June.

Put a humidifier in the bedroom and the other room in the house where you spend a lot of time. It works wonders for me in the winter when the heat is on.

I use generic petroleum jelly on my hands before bed, which helps a lot. I also use it on my lips and around my nose when I have a cold and that area becomes chapped. I only do the petroleum jelly at night. During the day I use Olay Total Effects with SPF 15, because the sun really damages skin, even in the winter. I do the same as paloma2001 as far as patting dry and moisturizing right after a shower- I even have a poof sponge with a handle to get my back. I do a fish oil capsule every morning, but since I tend to eat a lot of Mexican food (even at breakfast) I don't have a problem with the fish burps- I have other issues LOL!

We lived in Denver a few years ago and I experienced what you are talking about; I ended up consulting an aesthetician who suggested starting out with a
thorough exfoliation in order to improve the absorption of serums and creams.
It really helped; if you're skin is rid of the top layer of dead skin, it can really soak in better the product you feed it.

No matter what product you use, expensive or not, starting out with totally clean skin is essential; I am in dire need of a deep exfoliation right now.
