Genny, you may want to get some false eggs for her. Not everyone will agree but I feel it encourages birds to stop laying and go broody when there is something left in their nests. You can likely find some plastic Easter eggs this time of year in a dollar store. Weight them with sand so they are about as heavy as a duck egg and glue or tape the halves together. When she goes broody, you take back the plastic eggs and give her the real ones. Don't worry about keeping the numbers the same... birds can't count. My American Buff goose went broody just a couple of days after my sister put one marble goose-sized egg in the nest. It was a bit of a joke, because when I picked it up it was much heavier than a real goose egg and very smooth. I couldn't figure it out until I saw her laughing. LOL. Sisters! But it did the trick.

I wouldn't necessarily jump onto Topaz based on my limited experience with it- I just posted to peek peoples curiosity about it as I've never heard it discussed. Noog, Where are you located exactly? Goldrush needs a pretty long season and may not ripen properly when you get even a typically long season there. Adams chart suggests that Suncrisp requires at least 2 weeks less season to ripen which should be encouraging to those in Z5. Based on limited experience I think Suncrisp may actually be as good- I'm hoping it's a reliable annual cropper which I can't quite say for Goldrush as grown here. Fedco has a good rep but Adam's can probably supply a better sized tree. In your zone there really isn't that much difference between earliest and latest flowering varieties to where there isn't enough overlap- at least that's the case where I am. Further south it becomes more a problem. Even without looking them up I expect your range of varieties would eliminate pollination concerns anywhere.

The three different plantings I've seen of Topaz Jewel weren't great. The one in Asheville is an older planting, before Carefree Sunshine was released. Carefree Sunshine does beautifully in Asheville and for a bright yellow, it would be my choice. But Topaz Jewel was an important rose, and genetically may still be important if the pollen can be used. Back when Moore introduced it, 1987, there were few yellow cold hardy roses. Cold hardy folks subsisted in a world of pinks, reds and whites with some creams thrown in for good measure (Oversimplified, forgive me, Frank Skinner). And a yellow rugosa was exciting for its potential for landscapes. (And we know how good yellow looks against some shades of green.) So where do we go for yellows? My own bent is to go to the old yellows from the 1800s because their hues go so well with other roses of that century. Topaz Jewel would fit in with that color pallette, but it doesn't seem that happy here. (Maybe it likes the cold winters of the Great Plains, as do many other hybrid rugosas.) To my color preferences, the bright yellows of Carefree Sunshine and the yellow floribundas that include Golden Holstein, Sunflare, Mountbatten, and a couple whose names escape me (although I can't forget their in-your-face shades of yellow) are too bright to use with older roses with more romantic, subtle colors.

I was having trouble finding any record of a deciduous azalea named "Topaz". Searching various catalogs, I found: "Gold Topaz", an Exbury azalea from Glendoick Nursery in Scotland. Looking in Ken Cox's book "Rhododendrons & Azaleas, A Colour Guide" there is a listing: "Goldtopas, Orange-yellow, strongly blotched orange. Dark-green foliage is reddish brown on the young growth, probably the best of any Exbury hybrid. One of the most impressive yellow-hybrids, but we don't find it all that easy to propagate. Hachmann" Looking for "Goldtopas" there is a photo at: http://www.rhodogarden.com/main/deciduous_azalea_hybrids.html where it describes "Goldtopas" as: Knap Hill azalea 'Goldtopas' Parentage: ('Cecile' x 'Klondyke') x 'Marion Merriman', Hachmann, 1983. Habit: Compact wide habit. Height 1 m in ten years. Flowers: Vivid yellow to light orange yellow with a strong orange blotch. Flower size 6.5 to 7.5 cm. Cold Hardiness: -15°F, -26°C. Having gone through this, Glendoick in Scotland and Hachmann in Germany are the only sources I can find and that is for "Goldtopas". I don't have the slightest idea how to get one to Tennessee.
