Match socks to what?

There's so much info on the web that I don't know what's right, what's wrong.

Is there any cut & dry site that tells me for sure what to match socks to?

Robin, you have been given some great advice, especially checking your gauge, which none of us like to do! If a pattern calls for casting on more stitches, but has a pattern to it, especially a cable, try it anyway. Cables take up stitches, or pulls the stitches tighter, similar to ribbing, so it takes more stitches to fit the same. Also, measure your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of your toe. Subtract 2 inches. That is how long you need to knit the foot before you start your decreases for the toes. The decreases will take up about 2 inches. That is how you get the socks to fit your feet in length, no matter what the pattern says. As long as you get it to fit around with the right number cast on, you can make the foot as long or as short as you need to. I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult Sock pattern. It has multiple cast ons for different weights of yarn. I cast on 72 for my fluffy legs and decrease to 68 at the ankle so the foot fits right. For my DH, I cast on 72 and do that to the end with only decreases at the toe. All on size 2 needles. Cables are not hard as long as you mark your rows and pay attention. The afterthought heel is my new favorite heel. I wear my slipper socks nearly all the time when I am at home and wear out toes and heels quickly. After snipping out the "regular" heel and doing an afterthought heel, I was so proud of myself. Now that is the only heel I use! Love2knit, it is just as if you were knitting a toe on a top down sock. If you are knitting toe up, then you just knit in a length of waste yarn about 2" from the end of your foot (for me this is just about where my ankle bone is) across half of the foot sts. Now go back and knit them again with your sock yarn. Then just finish knitting your sock. If you are knitting the socks top-down, then just knit in the waste yarn at about the same spot you would normally begin the heel flap, then go back and knit the stitches again with your sock yarn and again, finish the sock. Go back and weave your needles back into the stitches on the waste yarn, then pull the waste yarn out. I usually pick up an extra stitch at each end of my two circulars. Then, knit a toe. Yes, a toe. I decrease every other row at each end of the two circs until I have anywhere from 8 to 16 stitches left. This depends on the type of yarn and size of needles you are using. And you can try them on at any time to see if you think you need to decrease more. Then I close the heel with kitchener stitch (another thing that scared me until I gave it a try and found out I was making a mountain out of a molehill).

Running out of yarn for sock--what to do

I am trying to knit up some charity hats, wrist warmers and scarves for a group in San Francisco and I am using up yarns donated to my stash. Some were really expensive, but I really never could decide what to do with one or two skeins of this and that, some skeins being quite small. Some of these donated skeins don't even have labels on them so I don't know what they are, though most are animal fibers or combinations of synthetic and wools. A friend just wanted to get them out of her house, so I took them off her hands. But so many babies are coming this fall that I don't have the time for the project that I'd hope to have. Soooo, I will just knit up the rest for next year's donation.

Here's another pic of my sock knitting marathon! I've been using up all my left over wool to make these.I don't use a pattern as such,but knit the old fashioned way of adjusting my stitches and wool to the size of sock I need.My grandma taught me how to do this many moons ago.However,there are a kazillion patterns on the web for anyone doing a search.They're not that difficult once you get the hang of it. No, I'm serious. Match socks to shoes? Match socks to slacks? Match socks to shirt?

All I can find is that men need to match socks to shoes & the shoes need to match the belt.

Sorry to waste anyone's time. Thanks anyhow. I'll just stop in at Macy's or Dillard's then. I'm sure there will be someone there knowledgeable & willing to help.

Libby, if your question is sincere I apologize, we have so many spammers and bogus posts here I jumped the gun.

I only wear three colors of socks: white, tan, and black.

If you are wearing white tennis shoes, only white socks, no matter what else you are wearing. Black tennis shoes, black socks.

If I wear a dressier shoe, like Borns or other dressy "comfortable" shoe, they are usually a brown or tan, so I wear the brown socks.

The socks should match the shoes, not anything else, although you should match the shoes to your outfit anyway. Black polo and jeans? Black shoes and socks. White tee and shorts? White shoes and white ankle socks. Multi colored shirt? Any, but go with the shade of the multi colors, if it is dark, go with the black, light, go with brown, pale colors, go with white.

Bottom line, match the socks to the shoes.

Thanks for your input & I apologize for the lateness of my reply.

I just don't understand why people are willing to 'attack' someone who asks a question and does not include a link to selling something. Meaning, my post was obviously not spam.

And as for bogus posts, I don't know what you mean. I guess I haven't seen the likeness of such.

Glad to see you back, Libby! Are your feet a fashion statement now??? ;-)

We recently had some bogus posts removed, they are posts where the first question is about a particular item like shoes, purses, or jewelry, and have no link. Then a "different" poster comes in to save the day with a link to their website with just the items the original poster was looking for. It is a setup that helps the spammer's posts stay alive for a while.

The nature of the beast, I guess.

Oh no, I'm having trouble finding the right socks. I like them with cushion, though not boot thickness, & at the ankle. I also want solid color. All I can seem to find is thin dress-like socks, mostly no-show, or all sorts of designs/patterns. I've looked at Target, Kohl's, WalMart, Marshall's & TJ Maxx. I've temporarily given up.

That's very interesting about the posts & spammers. I'm a sporadic poster on GW & THS. And I 'recently' made a new account. My old one was from maybe 7 yrs back. So I guess I never noticed what you're referring to.
