"spamming posts" - I know what the terminology "spam" means, but I happened to see a post where someone made a remark without an "ad" and were told that they were being reported for "spamming posts"... Confused - thanks

Spamming is when someone posts specifically for promoting their own business or product, ususally with a link to their website. It is not people who have been using GardenWeb for some time like many people here. Often you can identify spammers by clicking on their "name" and seeing when they joined. Usually it is the same day as the spamming post. Also, they include no details about themselves, love of gardening, etc., because they are just tring to sell something not really be part of GardenWeb.

Some forums, like the wedding forum, are more subject to it than others.

If a person makes a post to share a new product they found and like, it is possible they could be accused of being a spammer when they really are just sharing.

If someone asks for some kind of help, and others recommend products which might solve the problem, that would not be seen as spamming since the info was requested.
OK?

Unless "they" post under a different user name to request that info. That's happened here, too. They are trying to appear innocuous as possible.

I would guess in your example maybe someone thought someone was spamming when maybe they weren't actually. Sometimes people will get a little over sensitive and everytime a product is brought up by name, etc... they think someone is trying to spam. Then again, some people are often able to spam quite well without being so obvious, and only a few can spot them. So maybe it was real spam in your example, but you just didn't notice it as such.

Carrie, check out the Entertainment forum. There is an example of "back door spam" as I like to call it. It's titled Always wear slippers or something like that. The poster is beanie. You will see that they joined the same day they posted. They go on and on about wearing slippers in their family. How slippers are the best thing since sliced bread and in amongst their drivel they slip in a web site that sends you to slipper land. That is considered spamming by ivillage.
There are places here on GW that allow businesses to advertise. Doing so in the forums is a no no. NancyLouise

Beanie has also posted about the slippers on Flooring. If it wasn't spam, I'd think they have a slipper fetish..lol. The first post didn't sound too spam-like, but the second one, after a few people had responded, was pretty obvious.
