Can I put Michelia Champaca in the garage during winter
Comments (4)It does not go dormant so putting it in a dark area for an extended period of time may kill it. Michelia Champaca cannot survive below freezing like the Michelia Figo (banana shrub) can. So if your garage is not heated it might freeze. I would bring it inside and keep it away from direct heat sources that might dry it out and give it a sunny window. Try not to under or over water it ...checking to make sure the soil is dry an inch down before watering again. If you can give it a mist with a hand sprayer daily it will be helpful in keeping the humidity up. Some people put a saucer under the plant and put some pebbles in the saucer thus raising the plant up a little and putting a little water in the bottom of the saucer. This helps with humidity but prevents the plant from sitting in the water which can lead to root rot. Hope this helps a little :) ~SJN...See MoreQuestion about over wintering iris in the garage
Comments (11)If your garage doesn't freeze or freeze for very long then pot them up and only water them 3 or 4 times during the winter. If the garage is going to have them freeze solid then your better off just stuffing them in a spot in the ground near the foundation. Brown bagging them might work. Maybe mist them once and a while. Don't use damp sawdust or peat. They will rot. While they are dormant you have to be careful not to drown them. They really need very little water especially while they are sleeping. Can't let them dry into iris leather either. That's why I say potting them up might be your best bet. I've kept a few in pots in a cold room in the house. Stuck them in the window and pretty much ignored them for most of the winter. Pretty much treated them like a real cactus. Tried to keep them as dormant as possible. Watered very sparingly. I'd have to use dynamite to plant anything in March here. Did kick them out at the end of April or beginning of May when the snow is done and I can move the soil. Got a little sunburn and windburn but survived....See MoreWhen to bring potted maples into garage for winter protection
Comments (7)I'm not sure I'd be quite as cavalier about the potential cold damage as the above poster :-) Many trees - JM's in particular - are extremely vulnerable to cold temperatures with their root systems. And that increases when these plants are potted or held in containers, as there is no soil mass surrounding them to provide insulation. That's why it is suggested that containerized plants be hardy to at least 2 zones lower than yours if to remain outdoors in containers all winter long. Generally the trigger temp is 25 degrees.......below that for any length of time (like overnight) and you DO run the risk of freezing the roots and fatally damaging the plants. Most bonsai sites will confirm this as winter cold is a serious concern with bonsai enthusiasts. Other maple species may be hardier and will tolerate colder temps, however I'd not be inclined to tempt fate and so I would provide winter protection. As long as your unheated garage remains above the mid to low 20's, that should be fine. And you can bring in with leaves still on or not - the trees are already entering dormancy and any remaining leaves will be dropping shortly. Light is not a concern during ths period but cold and water are. If you can keep the temps between around 45F to 25F you should be fine and do not allow the soil to dry out completely but also do not over wet. Soil should remain just damp. FWIW, leaving containerized trees outdoors all winter without protection is usually reserved only for warmer zones - z8 and above. And even in these mild winter zones, care must be taken should an unexpected cold snap result in a significant temperature drop....See MoreFig tree in the garage over winter. Mouse problems?
