Expensive Appliances: Dissapointed in workmanship/quality control
Comments (5)This is interesting from a reliability point of view. It sounds like all the companies you've dealt with have replaced defective parts w/o any argument. That reflects a business decision on their part. It is expensive to test every item that comes out of a manufacturing facility, and some companies are going to choose a path where they do random sampling (at some frequency depending on their known failure rate) and send out most of their product without doing any acceptance testing. Other companies are going to test each and every item. I think I heard that Bosch does this with their dishwashers. There's a reliability term called "infant mortality." If you test every item you'll cover almost all the infant mortality issues. What's left is the small likelihood that a tested item has some manufacturing defect that will fail over a longer period of time. If you do lot sample testing, you will not cover infant mortality. In that case you have to be prepared to address a certain number of failures early in the life of the product. I'm glad the companies you've dealt with have responded appropriately. I know it's a hassle to deal with stuff like that. It's hard to know what the business owners think about their customer's emotional response to a situation like this. But maybe you wouldn't have bought those items at all if the price had reflected a different quality control approach....See MorePatio Furniture-Quality difference between Target vs. High end
Comments (56)I found this thread because I just got off the phone with my wife who informed me that replacement slings for our set of six Telescope chairs will be $780.00! That is a very tough pill to swallow, and like many here we weighed this heavily against just getting a cheaper set from HD, Costco, or any number of stores. Our set is about 10 years old to date (purchased summer of 2010) and the aluminum frames, table, and umbrella have held up extremely well (we do store them inside for winter though). Ultimately, I decided to stick with these and pay the exorbitant price for a few reasons: - The rest of the set is extremely high quality. I feel good each year when I pull it out of storage - heavy duty powder coated aluminum construction that has lasted well and still looks 9/10 after a spring wipe-down. - It does bother me how much importation has changed - pushing us toward a throw-away-away-and-buy-another culture. I do feel like we enjoy additional quality on these American made items (not always the case). - Less and less stuff is American made any more. As an engineer and a maker, I miss the days when we made most of the best stuff here. This set still exemplifies that quality. It's a little thing, but something I rarely get to enjoy these days. - After 10 years, with very little degradation (other than the fabric slings), I know what to expect from this set, and feel confident that they will last another 10 years easily with new fabric. The convenience of going 10-12 years between having to think about this, or take a gamble on something potentially less durable is worth something to me. Surely, I'll be feeling the sting of this bill in about a month (so good thing I'm writing this now!), but I thought I'd share what tipped us to reinvesting in this very expensive set. Comments (12)williamsem: thanks for the info. Your point about installation is well taken. I am working with a reputable kitchen design company that has a dedicated crew to do installation, including a granite fabricator. I've seen the work in their showroom (gorgeous!). Is that sufficient, or should I ask to see a granite install in a client's home? colorfast: interesting article about the dye in granite. We are getting a black granite (Volga Blue). Should I test the slabs as directed in the article? Good tips about what to look for in installers; I'll ask our KD about how their fabricator works. Still not sure about the different granite yards. The largest one in the area (60+ mile radius) has a large selection, though the slabs didn't seem to match well. Some of the sales people didn't seem terribly knowledgable. A yard that seemed more knowledgable, and had shops in several states, didn't have a great selection for us. The one that had the most beautiful granite (matched slabs, beautiful finish) had a sales person who wasn't terribly forthcoming for our questions (except to say that the granite was better quality because it was finished in Italy, but then he was Italian). How do you know whether it's a good yard? We are also relying on our KDs suggestions....See MoreQuality difference between max divani & Natuzzi?
