Pavers -quality & differences between brands
Comments (6)I realize this is an old thread, but I am responding to add new information. When I renovated my patio 12 years ago (2010) my contractor used Capitol Pavers. The company had been around for 4 generations, ,so I had confidence that this was a good product. the result was a beautiful patio. Fast forward to 2016, we decided to remove the solid concrete around our pool and replace it with pavers. We used the same contractor, who told us that Capitol had gone out of business, so we would not be able to match the existing pavers on the patio. We chose a Cambridge product, completely different from the existing patio. Here we are now, 5 years later, and the original pavers from 2010, now 12 years old, are crumbling around the edges. The original warranty on these pavers was a lifetime warranty. I guess lifetime is more about the life of the manufacturer, not the lifetime of the paver. I have no recourse because the company is out of business and the pavers are no longer being made. I was told by an installer that Capitol had problems with several batches of their products which began to decompose over time, and that's why they went out of business. So my options are basically 1) Replace all of the existing patio pavers or 2) Sit around and watch the existing patio pavers decompose....See MoreExpensive Appliances: Dissapointed in workmanship/quality control
Comments (5)This is interesting from a reliability point of view. It sounds like all the companies you've dealt with have replaced defective parts w/o any argument. That reflects a business decision on their part. It is expensive to test every item that comes out of a manufacturing facility, and some companies are going to choose a path where they do random sampling (at some frequency depending on their known failure rate) and send out most of their product without doing any acceptance testing. Other companies are going to test each and every item. I think I heard that Bosch does this with their dishwashers. There's a reliability term called "infant mortality." If you test every item you'll cover almost all the infant mortality issues. What's left is the small likelihood that a tested item has some manufacturing defect that will fail over a longer period of time. If you do lot sample testing, you will not cover infant mortality. In that case you have to be prepared to address a certain number of failures early in the life of the product. I'm glad the companies you've dealt with have responded appropriately. I know it's a hassle to deal with stuff like that. It's hard to know what the business owners think about their customer's emotional response to a situation like this. But maybe you wouldn't have bought those items at all if the price had reflected a different quality control approach....See MoreHow much difference in quality between these 2 fixtures?
Comments (4)Check at Wayfair too, https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/three-posts-buckland-8-light-candle-style-chandelier-thre8353.html Wayfair and its various companies, including Birch Lane, sell fixtures and other items from various manufacturers -- Quoizel, Safavieh, etc. -- with made-up manufacturer/brand names and also made-up style names. You don't know unless you do a Google image search or the item arrives bearing the actual manufacturer's name. odin is correct -- they are the exact same items....See MoreX-Back Dining Chairs - quality differences between brands?
Comments (10)Something I learned- Wayfair's portfolio of brands includes Joss & Main, Birch Lane and All Modern. However, the same item may be called by a different name & the price may be different. I always check the prices. Here's an example: $619- https://www.jossandmain.com/furniture/pdp/daisi-60-tv-stand-mtna1928.html?piid=22568511 $549- https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/hd0/daisi-60-tv-stand-l6-k~mtna1928.html?refid=GX103455957163-MTNA1928_22568514&device=c&ptid=353254267655&network=g&targetid=pla-353254267655&channel=GooglePLA&PiID%5B0%5D=22568514&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1tysguCz3QIVmI7ICh0qwwkOEAQYASABEgJssvD_BwE&piid=22568511...See Moreant3eye
