Just got my Y0660 from Sam's club

I picked-up the Y0660 over the weekend. What a great grill. I saw 620+ degrees on the hood thermometer, does a great job seering beef. The construction seems the same as a Viking or DCS. There are very few compromises on this grill, only the cast iron burners and the regular steel IR burner plate.

I was originally considering the Virco but this is a noticeable step up in construction, as it should be for almost twice the price. From a value standpoint, I think the Virco is unbeatable but I was willing to trade some value to upgrade the grill and cart.

If anyone is considering this grill, buy one now as Sam's club will not be stocking them through the winter. I was told that these are season items, only carried through spring/summer. They won't be getting any more in as the fall/winter stuff is replacing it, like Christmas stuff for example. The first store I called was down to a demo only (they said they wern't getting any more) and the second store I called had three that they just got the day before. They said that was their last shipment. So get one soon as they might be gone before long.

I've had my eyes on the Member's Mark grill at Sam's for a couple years now... My Sam's sold their last one about 2 months ago... then they got the other model with the enamaled steel lid, and smaller cooking space... I had very little interest in that model...

However... after a month or two absense, my local Sam's club just got about 10 new Member's Mark grills in stock. This after they've alread started stocking Christmas stuff... So... I know for sure that some Sam's Club stores are still getting these grills in...

One thing always has me scratching my head on these MM grils, is the cooking grate... those 'bars' must be hollow tubes, as they are not all that solid it seems. I can easly bend them with my bare hands... I'm not sure it's a problem, but just something I noticed... Theose grates would probably also weigh about twice as much if they were solid...

Anyone ever bend their grates on these grills when using a little extra elbow grease when brushing these grates off?

Not sure which MM grill you are referring to. The one I bought, the Y0660, is the large $1500 model. It has very heavy, solid grates. They are not going to bend! -Terry

Well, my patience finally paid off. I stopped by Sam's today, and they had their fall bulbs marked down to $7.01 with plenty left to choose from. They still have daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, irises, anemone, allium, etc. I opted for a box of 45 Hyacinths, 15 each of: Jan Bos, Delft Blue, and Carnegie and one box of 15 Jan Bos Hyacinths and 40 Jetfire Daffodils.

"It just is not wide enough to retain optimal heat." My earlier post "Also you must not have read my post as mine is right now 160-165 depending on where I stick the thermometer. Like I said the bin isn't even 1/2 filled and it's at that temperature so your theory of needing that size bin to provide that temperature is just plain wrong." PK's earlier post PK, I do not concede the point. In the beginning of November, I made two side-by-side mesh bins and filled them with exactly the same ingredients in one day. One was 30" in diameter, and one was 40" in diameter. I kept daily records on these two piles as I have on all my piles. The core temp was slightly higher on the 40" bin; but more importantly, kept the temp. up for a longer period of time. I'll give the exact numbers next time I'm on line. I don't think I said the core temps would be higher on a wider pile, but rather the heat would be retained longer. Val - I don't have a problem with racoons, but my dog takes no interest in my piles when smelly day old fish scraps have been put in the middle. Keep in mind that I only add fish when the core temp is 130F or more. This dissolves the fish scraps (mainly bluegill or small) in less than ten days. People who have odor issues often add smelly items when their core temp is not this high. My next door neighbor is adding whole banana peels to a 30F core and wonders why they don't break down as quickly as mine.

The only place I found a cover large enough is direct from the Sams customer service number in the manual(which is Grand Hall). Their number is 800-770-9769. All the other grill covers I've seen are not wide enough (26.2 inches). The price is $45.00 plus about $12.00 S&H. I thought that was high until I saw prices of other "large" covers. Unfortunately, the YO660 covers are on backorder. I was told they will ship in July. I'll have to fabricate a makeshift cover from a tarp and velcro until then. If you find a quality cover that will fit the 52x26x49 YO660 grill let us know...

Terry, You are in the same boat I am/was. The Costco in St. Peters, MO just got their first six. The manager is holding one for me through today. So I've never seen a Virco Classic in person. There is one on eBay with a BIN price of $1100 or so. I know that the smaller MM grill has/had ceramic flame tamers. I have been looking at the big one and can't remember. But size and feature-wise all three are very close. The smaller MM is about 31.2 by 19" deep. The big MM is 33 by 19" deep so you don't gain that much primary cooking space. From what I've read on this forum, that is about the same amount of space as the Virco. The smaller MM doesn't co stock with the warming rack either. The size difference is that the $1500 MM has a shelf added on to the side burner shelf. So yes you get extra width and a couple of drawers instead of just two doors, but is it worth the extra 9 bills? My father just picked up the $600 MM. He said it took him about two hours to put together and he likes it so far. I'll add my two cents on the Virco later. I am hoping that the hood is all double walled SS instead of the single wall like the MM. If you don't care about having the rotisarie then check out the Kenmore Elite at Sears. It has a list of $1200, but you can find it on sale for $999. It is basically the same as the big MM with the extra toys (rotis, back burner, cover, smoker box/burner). Grand Hall makes several other grills for Sears as well. Personally, I am going for the large primary grilling surface as my main criteria. Followed by hopefully longevity. As far as SS burners go. I currently have a 5 year old Char-Broil 8000 and it's on third set of burners. But I usually grill three time a week year round.

I'm talking about the $600 MM grill... and I know they will bend because I have bent them in the store with realtively small amount of force. The bars are round, and about a 3/8 inch in diameter. I am quite sure the bars must really be hollow tubes, because if they were solid SS they would be heavier and presumably stiffer...

I have never seen the $1500 MM grill... only heard about it...

$1500 grill is actually made in a different country, different parts, just different. Not to say the $599 grill is not a good value, it most definitely is. I had not even though about the hollow grate, but you are probably correct. That is probably the trade-off in having them spin, which is kind of a cool feature for cleaning and moving stuff around.
