Kamado Joe

Does anyone know anyone that has a Kamado Joe Ceramic cooker. It is new to the market and is a direct competiter to the Big Green Egg. Comes with cart and shelves and nearly fully assembled unlike the BGE which has to be purchased and assembled from about 20 pieces plus hardware. As a bonus it is red and not green. I would think it would cook just like the Egg.

Don't have a Kamado Joe, but might shed some light on the EGG. Really not much assembly with and EGG. There might be 20 pieces if you are counting the nest and side tables. Egg consists of dome, lower half, fire ring, firebox, ceramic grate, cooking grate, rain cap, ceramic feet(3). Options are thermometer and daisy wheel, nest, side tables and bands for the basic set up. Concerning colors I have seen BGE's in green and blue. About putting the BGE together it is straight forward and not difficult at all.

If colors really interest you you might want to look at Grill Dome they offer red, black, green, blue and sometimes orange and yellow.

Or if you want a tile variant look at the straight stick Kamado. Primos are pretty much black/gray (never seen any other colors) and Imperial Kamados only ever seen one of them and it was red. Haven't seen a Kamado Joe yet.

I have a couple of ceramic cookers (three different manufactures) they all cook alike, food tastes the same out of each. You cant go wrong with ceramic they are awesome.

We're doing a small outdoor kitchen under a covered patio, which will get plenty of use, but it won't be anything fancy - no sink, refrigerator, etc.: - About 10' counter top with spaces for two Big Green Eggs at the two ends ... and work space in the middle - A pull-out metal grill underneath the counter, which can serve as a place to set hot grill, etc. - Storage space for all the Big Green Egg's accessories. - Storage space for lump - A lower counter top sized to hold a Yeti cooler (lower so it's easier to reach into) built in grills are EXPENSIVE! I was looking at a Lynx 36" with no bells and whistles and it was over 5k. And WHY? If you have a Big Green Egg, I can see needing more accessories, but why another grill?

My husband has decided on only getting the Green Egg and using it as a grill. According to him it's suppose to be the greatest invention ever! Yeah, we still have another grill hanging around, but the Egg is the only one we ever use any more. I think we're going to gift the charcoal grill to our daughter and new son-in-law. They're pretty much starting from nothing, so they'll appreciate it. Annette, I like your set-up. We're planning on something fairly similar. We intend to add a second, smaller Big Green Egg later. This'll allow us to use the smaller one when we want to cook just for us two, and when we have guests we can use the smaller one for an appetizer and the larger one for an entree. We also want a smaller one so we can take it camping. "If you want to cook on a covered porch, you must use a strong vent hood." ... i agree. Been there, done that. Won't do it again. Wondering how we're having such different experiences ... here's what I suspect: My covered porch, which works FINE with a no-hood grill is set up like the one on the left -- covered porch is attached to the house /is open to the air on three sides and gets a pretty good breeze. My porch is about 6' above ground level /steps on both ends -- could that make a difference? I wonder if people who are having a different experience have a porch more like the one to the right -- an "indented" porch? Or at least a porch that in some way gets less breeze.

Hello, I'm nearly sold on getting a Kamado Joe Classic II. I live in Vancouver, WA - the grill will probably be covered and under a patio cover. But, moisture / humidity exist. I think the parts are 304 stainless steel. With this climate though, I'm always concerned about rust. Any experience or opinions with the Kamado Joe in a high humid climate? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Kim. My research beyond Houzz showed that the ThermoPro consistently got much better reviews, so that's what I purchased - Model TP20, which has 2 probes. I've used it thrice since it arrived and it performed as promised each time, though one of the probe sockets is a bit temperamental. The probe wants to pop loose from a firm connection and give a bad reading. Once everything is set up and the sending unit situated so it doesn't get jostled, all seems to work very well. I did an overnight low & slow smoke of a 12 lb brisket over the weekend, pulling it out of the grill when the internal temp read 195*. If it wasn't my first brisket, I'd be inclined to say it was perfect, but I'll wait until I have a better basis for comparison to risk sounding like I'm boasting (the grill deserves the credit, not me). I know one thing, I wouldn't trade the Kamado Joe for a dozen of the best gas grills. Since I moved back to charcoal by way of the Kamado after at least 20 years of using top of the Weber gas grill line, I do have a good basis for comparison between the two. Plus, it's great fun learning all the different techniques you can use to grill, bake, smoke ....... An artisan bread and pizza will be my next endeavors. Thanks again for the reply. Al

Anyone else have one of these? If so, where is the best place to buy it? I saw it on Amazon, but the dimensions listed there were confusing and did not give the diameter of the cooking grill.

I see this is an old post, but I have a Kamado grill by Kamado Joe. We have a Big Green Egg dealer in my home town, but I drove over 100 miles to the KJ dealer near Detroit - there's THAT much difference.
